The operation of the devices is the same in any case, the only difference being that when the flat stone or cylindrical slip is used the abrasive appliance remains stationary while in the other case the flat edge presented to the scissor blade is continually changing as the stone rotates. 7
It is important, of course, that the edge to be sharpened be presented to the fiat surface of the stone at the right angle. In a pair of scissors, this edge to be sharpened is inclined from the plane of the blade. This inclined edge must rest firmly over its entire surface against the flat face of the stone or it will not be sharpened correctly.

The sharpening device may also be employed for sharpening other implements than scissors. For instance, it may be employed for sharpening a, knife. As a knife of the ordinary household type has no eye through which screw 20 may pass, it is proposed to provide a slightly different type of jigfor'mounting the knife on the device. This is shown in Figs. 5 and 6 and is indicated generally by the reference numeral 43.
Jig 43 has a right angle body 44. One side is provided with an orifice 45 through which screw 20 passes, mounting the jig on the sharpening Furthermore, in order to be sharpened,-it must be drawn over the stone, maintaining full contact with the stone during this operation. The instant device is adapted to perform this operation.
The angle of the blade to be sharpened may be determined by resting the cutting edge against the stone and tilting the blade until the desired contact is obtained. During this tilting, the set screw I! will be loose, the barrel rotating relative to the rod l2. Also, the roller I9 will be rested on a fiat surface such as the flat surface of a table, and the sharpening stone must also rest on this flat surface or a fiat surface parallel thereto. A suitable sharpening stone 32 is shown in Fig. 1 restingon a table 33. The roller is also shown resting on a fiat surface 34 which may be a part of the table 33. Once the angle has been determined, the set screw is tightened so that this angle will be maintained during the sharpening operation.
If the angle of the edge to be sharpened is known, the jig may be disposed at the correct angle by means of the mark l3 and the scale l8. Sometimes the angle of the edge is not correct and therefore it is desired to determine a correct angle. For this purpose anzmgle-determining device 35 (Fig. 4) is provided for use with the sharpening device. This device 35 may be employed in all cases, if desired, as it insures a correct angle on the scissors. It includes a body 36, rectangular in shape, and formed of two flat bars-of metal 31 separated at the top and bottom by two shims 38, all four parts being rigidly connected as by welding. The shims provide a rectangular slot 39 in which may be inserted a plate 40 having one angle-determining edge 4!. Plate 40 is forced against the bottom shim by a set screw 42 threaded through an axial orifice formed' Once the preliminary adjustment steps afore described have been performed, the sharpening device is ready for sharpening. The jig is free to rotate, as aforedescribed about the screw so that the edge of blade 29 can be brought into contact with stone 32. The blade is maintained in correct angular position on the stone'by the roller I0 which rolls back and forth on the table asth'e blade device similarly to the manner in which the scissor-holding jig was mounted. The other side is provided with two orifices 46 through which bolts 41 pass.
A bar 48 is mounted on the bolts and secured thereto by wing nuts 49. The knife 59 to be sharpened is held between the bar 48 and. the adjacent side of the body 44 between the bolts 41. It is sharpened just as the scissor blade was sharpened, the angle being determined in the same way.
A device constructed in accordance with a modification of this invention as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. It includes a base 5| adapted to rest on a table in place of roller Ill. The base has a split sleeve 52 in which a cylindrical rod 53 is vertically secured. On rod 53 is telescoped a sleeve 54 having a clevis 55 at its top. A cylindrical guideway 56 is pivotally mounted in the clevis by screws 51. The guideway has a top longitudinal groove 58. A rod I2 is slidably disposed in guideway 56. Rod l2 has a tongue 59 disposed in groove 58, tongue 59 being formed by a strip secured in a groove in the rod l2. Barrel I4 and the associated parts is secured to rod l2 similarly to the manner in which it was secured to red l2.
The device of Figs. 7 and 8 operates just as did the device of Fig. 1 except that rod I2 slides in guideway 56 instead of moving with roller l0. Rod l2 has universal movement about the axes of guideway 56 and rod 53.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A device for use in sharpening an implement comprising a roller, a rod secured to said roller perpendicular thereto, a member connected to said rod forrotation relative thereto about said rod axis, a jig secured to said member for rotation relative thereto about an axis perpendicular and moved universally by said-rotations about to the axis of said member, said jig including tWo spaced plates, a screw extending through said plates and a nut on said screw whereby said implement may be firmly held between said plates said two axes, and means for locking said member against rotation relative to said rod.
2. A device for use in sharpening an implement comprising a roller, a rod secured to said roller perpendicular thereto, a member connected to spaced plates, a screw extending through said plates and a nut on said screw whereby said implement may be firmly held between said plates and moved universally by said rotations about said two axes, and means for locking said member against rotation relative to said rod, and a scale on said member and rod indicating the degree of relative rotation therebetween.
3. A device for use in sharpening an implement comprising a roller, a rod secured to said roller perpendicular thereto, a member connected to said rod for rotation relative thereto about said rod axis, a jig secured to said member for rotatlon relative thereto about an axis perpendicular to the axis of said member, said jig including two spaced plates, a screw extending through said plates and a nut on said screw whereby said implement may be firmly held between said plates and moved universally by said rotations about said two axes and means for locking said member against rotation relative to said rod, and a scale on said member and rod indicating the degree of relative rotation therebetween, each of said plates having a flat portion, a long flange at one side 9 thereof and a short flange at the opposite side thereof, said plates being disposed parallel to each other with the long flange of each plate adjacent the short flange of the other plate.
4. A device for use in sharpening scissors comprising a yoke, a roller journalled in said yoke, a cylindrical rod secured to said yoke perpendicular to said roller, a hollow barrel telescoped on said rod for rotation relative thereto, about said rod axis, a jig secured to said barrel for rotation relative thereto about anaxis perpendicular to the axis of said barrel, said jig including two spaced plates, a screw extending through said' barrel and plates and a nut on said screw whereby said scissors may be firmly held between said plates with said screw passing through one eye of said scissors and said scissors may be moved universally by said rotations about said two axes, and a set screw for locking said barrel against rotation relative to said rod.
5. A device for use in sharpening an implement comprising a roller, a rod secured to said roller perpendicular thereto, a hollow barrel telescoped on said rod for rotation relative thereto about said rod axis, said barrel having a threaded orifice and a set screw therein for locking said barrel against rotation relative to said rod, a jig secured to said barrel for rotation relative thereto about an axis perpendicular to the axis of said barrel, said jig including two spaced plates, a screw extending through an orifice in said barrel and through said plates, and a nut on said ji screw whereby said implement may be firmly held between said plates and moved universally by said rotations about said two axes, said barrel having a conical seat at each end of its jig screw orifice, and a conical fitting disposed on said jig screw in one of said seats, the head of said jig screw having a conical portion disposed in the other of said seats.
6. A device for use in sharpening a knife comprising a roller, a rod secured to said roller perpendicular thereto, a member connected to said rod for rotation relative thereto, a jig secured to said member for rotation relative thereto about an axis perpendicular to the axis of said member, said jig including a right angle plate, .a plate adjacent one side of said right angle plate and secured thereto by two special screws, a screw ex tending through said member and the other side of said right angle plate and a nut on said screw, whereby said knife may be firmly held between said two spaced screws and moved universally by said rotations about said two axes, and means for locking said member against movement relative to said rod.
