My invention relates to scissors sharpening devices and the same has for its main object the provision of an improved scissors sharpening device which will embody certain desired features of simplicity, efliciency and convenience and which will be economical in manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings,

The preferred embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, comprises a base made in the form of an v elongated box 9 provided with a removable top 10 which serves, when the device is in use, as a plate on which to place an abrasive block or piece 11. The box 10 is intended not only to support the parts of the device in an assembled relation for effecting the sharpen- 50 ing operations, but it is also intended to 1926. Serial No. 104,581.

Arranged at one end of the box, preferably midway thereof, is a vertically extending bearing block 12, within which is swiveled a post 13 made at its top end in the form of a yoke 14, as clearly shown in the drawings. The post 13, in order to carry out the full purpose of my invention, not only has a swiveling or stiflly turning action in the bearing block 12, but is also vertically adjustable therein so as to have a swiveling or turning action at the elevation desired. To this end, the post 13 is made of spring material in the form of a tube provided with a slit 15 through part of its length, as shown.
By making the post 13 in this manner, it has suflicient frictional engagement with its bearing for the support of the parts at the elevation desired.
The arms of the yoke 14 are correspondingly provided with screw pivots 16 on which an axis guiding member 17 is pivoted intermediate its length. An axis member 18 made in the form of a rod as shown, is projected through the guiding member and has free sliding movement therethrough as well as free rocking movement on the screw pivots 16. Thus mounted upon the post 13, the axis rod 18 may be moved both longitudinally and laterally of the base and of the abrasive block supported thereon it may also be rocked during such movements, and it may be supported for such movements at the elevation desired. Secured in angular relation upon the end of the axis rod 18 is a retaining block 19 adapted to receive and hold the scissors clamping device now to be described.
The means for holding the scissors comprises clamping plates 20 and 21 provided at corresponding ends with suitable interengaging lugs 22 for receiving a hinge pin 23 whereby these clamping plates are hingedly connected at corresponding ends. Opposite their hinge connected ends, the clamping plates are each formed with oppositely directed arms .24, designed to alford suitable cooperating surfaces for imprisoning the blades of the SClSSOI'S in open or spread relation, as best illustrated in Fig. 5. In use, one of the leader members 25 is passedthrough the retaining block 19 and secured in suitable position therein by means of a thumb screw 29. The leader arms 25 are then grasped by the fingers and the blade moved upon the abrasive block toward the post 13 On the reverse movement, the clamped scissors may be lifted from the abrasive block, if desired. Owing to the angular relation of the retaining block 19 and axis rod '18, the scissors are moved at an angle upon the abrasive block 11, much after the fashion in which edged instruments are usually ground or sharpened upon abrasive substances. Obviously, the clamping device holding the scissors may be reversed end for end so that either one of the projecting leader arms may be engaged with the retaining block. of the blades to be sharpened without removal and readjustment of the scissors in the clamp- It is to be noted that when the post 13 is positioned to place the sleeve 17 parallel with the top of the hone 11, the rod 18 will also lie parallel with the hone, in consequence of which reciprocations of this rod will cause the scissors supported by the clamping plates 20 and 21 to be presented to the surface of the hone at an unvarying angle, in this manner preserving the angle of the edge-face of the scissors constant. In actual practice I have foundthat it is not necessary to maintain the rod 18 absolutely parallel to the surface of the hone, since if it is approximately so, such tipping of the sleeve and of the red as will occur under these circumstances, will v have but slight effect in varying the angle of the edge-face. It will be' obvious that the from the supportingyoke 14, the smaller will be the angle of inclination between the surfaceofthe hone and the red 18, and consequently the less will be the tendency for the angle of the edge-faceof the scissors to vary.
masses lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described comprising in combination an abrasive element mounted on the slidable cover of a container, a clamping member secured to a rod longitudinally and angularly movable over said abrasive element and means including a split post vertically adjustable in a socket member fastened to said container and connected to the rod whereby said rod may be vertically adjusted.
2. In combination, a box having a slidable lid whereon is mounted an abrasive, a tubular supporting member having frictional engagement with a split tube concentrically positioned within said tubular supporting member, a yoke on said split tube, said yoke pivotally supporting a collar providing a socket wherein a rod is slidably mounted, said rod being fastened to a scissors supporting clamp.
3. In combination, a box having a slidable lid whereon is mounted an abrasive, a scissors supporting clamp secured to a rod axially and angularl adjustable in a supporting yoke on the en of a split tube frictionally secured within a tubular support in said box, said scissors supporting clamp and elements connected therewith being received by said box and covered by said sliding lid, substantially as described.
4. A device for use in sharpening scissors, comprising an abrasive block, a supporting base therefor, a socket in said base, a clamp adapted to receive a pair of scissors and hold the blades spread, a rod projecting from said clamp substantially parallel to one of said blades, a block in which said rod is longitudinally and rotatably adjustable, having means to clamp said rod in the desired angular and longitudinal adjustment, said block being carried by a rod, a sleeve in which said rod is longitudinally slidable and which is transversely pivotally mounted upon a post adjustable longitudinally and rotatably in the socket in the base but so frictionally engaged thereby as to maintain said post in the desired vertical and angular adjustment, whereby a scissors blade having been set at the desired bevel angle to the block and slid ing rod, said rod may be readily adjusted and maintained substantially parallel with the abrasive surfaCQ and S0 guided {15 to maintain said angle during reciprocation of said rod.
5. A device of the class described comprising in combination a container havmg a slidable lid whereon is mounted an abrasive element, a rod axially and angularly adjustable in a member fastened to a split post vertically movable in a socket member fastened in the container, said rod being provided with a clamp having means for retaining a pair of scissors therein, said lid providing a cover for said container whereby said lamp, and element connected therewith may be covered and stored, when not in use, within said container.
