F. M. MAHAN. VEHICLE, SEAT SHADE.
Patented July 12 J44, vex Liar.
' UNITED STATES PATENT Orricn.
FRANK M. MAHAN, OF ST. JOSEPH, MISSOURI.
VEHICLE-SEAT SHADE.-
SPEOIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,137, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed April 23, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK M. MAHAN, residing in the city of St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Seat Sun-Shades, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in vehicle-seat sun-shades and it consists in certain improved devices for raising and lowering the awning usually secured to bent bows over the vehicle-seat, and in improved means for securing the principal bow to the adjusting-arch, and providing the said arches with hinged feet, whereby they may be secured to the ends of various seats with greater facility.
My invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of my improved sun-shade applied to a wagonseat, the same being a section on line as a: in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front View of the left side of the sun-shade and wagon-seat, taken in section on line y y in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an entire sun-shade and wagonseat.
The construction consists of two metallic arches secured to the ends of the wagon-seat by hinged feet, and sustaining the legs of a principal bow, upon which are mounted two metallic slides or blocks adapted to support the legs of two side bows, which are jointed to the principal how by braces hinged to both.
A is the principal bow; B, the slide, fitted to move freely on the legs of the bow A and secured in any position by a set-screw, h, or other clamping device; 0 O, the side bows, pivoted to ears formed upon the slide B, and provided, like the ribs of an umbrella, with braces D D, which are jointed to the side bows between their tops and lower ends, and to the principal bow at a point somewhat nearer the top of the bow, so that when the slide is moved downward the bows O C may be drawn inward, as the ribs of an umbrella are moved inward, by pulling down the runner to which the braces are jointed.
E E are intermediate bows, which may be sired, to addfirmness to the covering F,which (No model.)
By this construction the whole top is controlled by the position of the slide B upon the bow A, and the various bows with their cover are drawn into a compact form when the slide is lowered by the action of the braces D upon the bows jointed to them.
To adjust the sun-shade at different angles upon the seat, arches a. are secured to the ends of the seat G by feet d d, and the bows O G are pivoted to the centers of the arches by means of a bolt inserted in a cross-bar, 1), formed in the arch for that purpose. The arches are also formed with a curved slot, a, into which a screw, to, is fitted, the screw also passing through the bow A or its clip, and being provided with a head upon one side and a thumbnm or similar means of clamping upon the other.
The bows may be tipped backward or forward at any desired angle, and secured firmly in position by the screws on, which are preferably passed through clips f secured to the feet of the bow A, and by which it is jointed to the cross-bar b.
To accommodate the feet d cl to the ends of various seats which are made at different angles from the vertical feet of the bow A, I form hinges e c at each end of the arch a, and joint the feet to the hinges, so that they may assume any required angle with the arch.
I am aware that a top-supporting rail for carriages has been made with .hinged feet, and I do not therefore claim such feet, broadly, the same being shown in Patent No. 214,884, of 1879; but I consider that the combination is entirely new of the arch a and cross-bar b with the lugs, whereby feet may be hinged to them at any desired angle.
Having thus shown the advantages of my invention, I claim the same as follows:
1. In avehicle-seat sun-shade, the combination, with a principal bow, of two side bows and a slide or runner fitted to the main bow, and provided with joints or lugs for the feet of the side bows and with means for securing it upon the principal bow, as herein described.
2. In combination with the bow A, runner B, and side bows, O O, the braces D D, pivoted to the side bows and center bow and operat ing to close the side bows when the runner is lowered, in the manner shown and described.
3. The combination of the bow A with the slotted arch a, having the cross-bar I), provided with lugs for hinges e, and having feet (1 d pivoted t0 the hinging lugs substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set'my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK M. MAHAN;
