Description

I April 27, 1948. J DOPPELT 2,440,396
SMOKING DEVICE Filed June 1, 19 .6
T74 vewzar Patented Apr. 27, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SMOKING DEVICE Max J Doppelt, Chicago, Ill.
Application June 1, 194.6, Serial No. 673,858
1 Claim. 1
The invention relates to smoking devices such as pipes, cigar or cigaret holders.
It is an object of the invention to provide a smoking device which permits a cool smoke to thereby make smoking more pleasant.
A further object constitutes the provision of means for permitting air to mingle with the smoke prior to reaching the bit or mouth piece of the device.
A still further object constitutes the provision of renewable means for admitting air to mingle with the smoke from the tobacco holding end to the mouthpiece.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent from a perusal of the invention, the latter comprises the means described in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the claim forming a part thereof and illustrated in the drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a pipe constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is partly section, partly view of a cigaret holder in which the invention is incorporated, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the several views of the drawing and particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, the pipe gen erally designated by lil comprises a bowl having integral therewith a short stem section !2.
A mouthpiece I3 is provided with the usual bit !4 and is spaced from the stem !2.
Between the stem section !2 and the mouth piece I3 is interposed a tubular member or drum 15 having end walls It and I! coextensive respectively, with the stem and mouthpiece. The tubular member has a continuous smooth exterior surface throughout its length.
The wall I5 is formed with a tubular extension l8 adapted to be snugly received in the bore of stem I2 and the bore of the tubular extension I8 continues through the end wall. The wall I! similarly is formed with a tubular extension I9 adapted to be received in the counterbored part of the inner end of the mouthpiece I3. The cylindrical wall 20 of the drum I5 is foraminous and may be made integral with the end walls or if preferred may be made separate and braced or otherwise secured to the end walls.
A porous paper 2! such as cigaret paper is wound around the wall 29 to completely surround the same by intimate contact at all points and is secured thereto by glue or cement.
It is evident that upon drawing in the smoke air is admitted by the breather action through the porous paper and the foraminous wall to comingle with the smoke so that a pleasant cool smoke is derived without the usual biting effect incident to pipe smoking.
It has been found that even after a continued use of the pipe the smoking effect is pleasant, cool and mild.
The paper covering 2! may be replaced from time to time with little effort. Since the paper 2! is removed a substantial distance from the zone of combustion, it can be used repeatedly without charring.
The modification shown in Figs. 3 and 4 depicts a cigaret holder where the drum 22 is interposed between a holder 23, and a mouthpiece 26.
The drawing discloses one embodiment of the invention. Numerous changes and alterations may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
1, therefore, wish to include all modifications, revisions and changes coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
In a smoking device having a tobacco holder and a mouthpiece, a foraminous tube having a continuous smooth exterior surface throughout the length of the tube interposed between said holder and said mouthpiece for admitting air to co-mingle with the smoke passing through said tube, and a sleeve of porous paper surrounding said tube, said sleeve of porous paper being in continuous intimate contact at all points with the smooth surface of said tube and removed from the zone of combustion to permit repeated use of said porous paper and whereby admission of air into the tube for co-mingling occurs solely through the pores of said paper.
MAX J. DOPPELT.
