PATENT BENJAMIN S. ATWOOD, OF SOUTH ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 244,025, dated July 12, 1881. Application filed May 15, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. A'rwoon, of South Abington, Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Hinge, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is particularly applicable to crates; but it may be used in any place where the ordinary hinge is employed.
The object of my invention is to provide a hinge which will admit of the cover of the crate or other article to which it is attached being readily detached, and which will permit the cover to be turned entirely back, so as to lie close against the side of the crate or other thing to which it is attached. I accomplish these objects by making one part of the hinge of metal in the ordinary form, with a hollow knuckle at one end to receive the other part, and with holes, through which the hinge is to be secured to the body of the crate to which it is to be attached. The other part of the hinge is to be made of metallic wire, bent in the form of a spring, its ends bent at right angles, so that the ends thus bent can be readily placed in the hollow knuckle at the other part of the hinge, the bent ends of the wire spring being sprung apart at this end to admit of its being connected with the other part. This spring is to be attached to the cover in any suitable manner. When it is desired to detach the cover the spring is to be opened or sprung apart sufficiently for the purpose.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents the hinge with the two parts united; Fig. 2, the
part to be attached to the body of the crate, and Fig. 3 the bent wire spring to be attached to the cover.
a is the knuckle,in to which the bent ends I) b of the wire portion of the hinge are to be placed. The ends I) b are free to turn within knuckle a. They may also be withdrawn therefrom for uushipping or separating the parts of the hinge.
I am aware that door-sprin gs have been constructed from a single bar wound helically and having straightened ends, the tips of which are bent to enter the opposite sides of a hollow knuckle; also, that hinges have been made in two parts, one being a hollow rectangle, and the other a strap having its end bent around one side of that rectangle to form a tube or sleeve; also, thathinges have been constructed of a hollow knuckle and a bar having one end bent to interlock therewith. I do not claim any of the above devices.
W hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A door-11in ge consisting of a hollow knuckle and a V-shaped bar having'its ends bent into the opposite sides of said knuckle, whereby the hinge is adapted to be uushipped by springing apart said ends, the knuckle being free to turn thereon, substantially as set forth.
