Marc-1130, 1948. s. SABANEEFF v WC JMA'N'SW'PROTECTIVE HOSIERY AND SHOE COVERING Filed Jan. 31, 1946 INVENTOR. 50pm: Snsmzarr ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 30, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT PROTECTIVE HOSIERY AND snon oovnnmo WOMAN S Sophie Sabaneeif, New York, N. Y. I v v pplication January 31, 1946, serial No. 644,505.
and one which will keep her, feet dry and hosiery unsoiled. An additional object isto provide such a protective device which is extremely compact and light weight and may therefor be carried in a woman's purse or hand bag without occupying undue space so that if inclement weather should unexpectedly arise the woman 'may step into a sheltered place and don the protective covering.
Other advantages will appear evident as this specification proceeds. Referring to the drawings forming a part thereof and in which a preferred form of the invention is illustrated:
Fig. 1 is an elevational plan view showing the foot-portion with the protective enveloping portion spread out;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the protective hosiery and shoe covering;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the shoe in position over the foot-portion of the protective covering before the enveloping portion has been applied;
Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the protective covering completely applied;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the forward part of the foot portion showing another form of the invention;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the protective enveloping portion used in connection with the foot portion illustrated in Fig. 5; and
Fig. 7 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 on the shoe of the wearer.
Referring again to the drawings and particularly to Figs. 1 to 4, the reference numeral 5 indicates the foot-portion of the protective device. As will be apparent, particularly from an inspection of Fig. 2, this foot portion is adapted to snugly fit over the toes and lower instep and extends around the lower heel and ankle portion of the wearer.
The foot-portion is preferably made of one piece 6 having an insert 1 for covering the lower instep and toe portions. The insert 1 is secured in place by any well known method that will make a water-proof seam. In order to'provide flexibility the upper portion of the insert over the instep. is shirred as indicated; 8. A- loop 9 is formed on the upper part of the heel-portion,
the purpose of which will hereinafter become apparent. p p l The foot-portionis formed of an extremely thin water-proof elastic plastic material. Due to the extreme thinness. of :the plastic materialand its elastic qualities and the shirring 8 the foot-portion fits the wearer so snugly that it will cause no discomfort when the shoeqis pulled over it.
At the toe end of the foot portion is a sheet of material lo, the natureof the material preferably being analogous to that used in the footportion. The sheet of material l0. may be formed as part of the insert 1 or it may be secured in any desired manner to the foot -portion in the region of the toe end. The material I0 is formed with a toe-portion l2 and its rear portion is provided with two pairs of loops l3--I3 through which a strap M is adapted to pass. Due to lightness of the material in it is easily drawn through the open toe portion [5 of the shoe prior to and while the shoe is being put on, as particularly illustrated in Fig. 3.
Fig. 4 shows the toe-portion [2 of the material I 0 fitting over the toe of the shoe and the balance of the sheet folded about the shoe and instep of the wearer. It will be noted the strap l4 passes downwardly under the sole of the shoe adjacent the heel and thence around the foot in the ankle region where the ends are tied together as indicated at I6, thus properly positioning the enveloping protective material. The strap I4 passes through the loop 9 which aids in maintaining the tWo parts in proper relation to each other.
References now will be had to Figs. 5, 6 and 7 Where similar reference characters denote similar parts. In this form of the invention the protective enveloping portion 20 is detachably secured to the foot-portion 5 so that if desired the foot-portion 5 could be used without the protective enveloping portion.
For this purpose a loop 2| is secured to the forward part of the toe-portion. Otherwise the foot-portion is identical to that described in the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4.
The protective enveloping portion 20 has a tab 22 secured to the toe-portion l2 thereof and the free endof the tab 22 has one part 23 of a conventional glove fastener secured thereto. In atpasses the sole area of the shoe. It is form fitting and has sufiicient inherent resiliency to hold it in contact with the shoe at the edge of the sole; A neat appearance is thus produced as the ,pro-
tective enveloping portion is similar to thatde scribed in connection with Figs. 1 to 4.
