Claims. (C1. 51205) 1 This invention relates to tool holders and to tools such as hones and files adapted to be held thereby.
For convenience, the terms hone and honing, wherever they appear hereinafter, including the claims, are intended as generic to hones and files and honing and filing.
It is an object of my invention to provide a tool holder constructed so as to be readily held by and removed from a reciprocable socket such as that employed in a filing machine or the like, an example of such a socket being disclosed in my Patent No, 2,367,864., granted January 23, 1945,
Another object is to provide a tool holder and tool constructed to readily secure and release the tool.
A further object is to provide a hone of extremely simple construction which adapts it to be readily attached to and removed from a holder.
An additional object is to provide a hone constructed so as to be held in a holder in different positions, so that a plurality of sides of the. hone may be applied selectively to the work.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be better understood upon reference to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:

Figs. 5 and 6, '7 and 8, 9 and are respecfragmentary side elevational forms of hone adapted to be held by my holder, Figs. 5, 7 and 9 being taken as indicated by the lines 5-5, l-l, and 9- 9 in Figs. 6, 8 and 18, respectively.
Referrin now more particularly to the drawing, I have shown at iii a holder constructed in accordance with one form of the invention. The holder iii may be formed of an elongated steel or other suitable and preferably metal blank rod of originally rectangular or any other suitable cross-section, one end portion of which may be turned to provide a shoulder l4 and a preferably cylindrical shank, it, the other end tively top plan and views of three other about the b ight 20 portion of the rod being milled to provide a relatively flat part 18 which is bent upon itself as at 2|] to form a U having arms 22 and 24, the arm 24 being free and resiliently flexible and arranged with its free end 26 somewhat overlapping and spaced from the adjacent end 28 of the intermediate or body portion 35 of the holder. Said end 28 is milled to provide a recess 32 of a few ten thousandths of an inchor more or less for a purpose which will appear. Said end 26 of the arm 25 has a beveled face 34 at the extremity thereof, facing the body 39 of the holder. The end 26 of the arm 24, short of the beveled face 34, has a threaded hole 36 in register with a smooth hole 38 in the end 28 of the body 39, said hole 38 terminating in a counterbore 43 at the side of said body remote from arm 24. A screw 42 has its head 44 in the counterbore and its shank 46 passing through the hole 38 and threaded in the threaded hole 36, so that said screw is operative in one direction to flex the arm 25 toward the body 30 and in the other direction to permit said arm, due to its inherent resilience, to return to its normal position.
A stop 50, which may be in the form of a pin having its shank 52 threaded or otherwise firmly secured in a hole 54 in the other end 56 of the body 30 of the holder Hi, has its head 58 against said other end 56 and at the same side 60 of the body as the arm 24, said head being beveled, preferably in situ, by filing or otherwise, to provide a beveled face 62 of substantially the same inclination as the aforesaid beveled face 32 relative to said side, when the arm 24 is flexed, and facing said side 60 of the body 30.
The holder I0 is adapted to readily and securely hold and release a hone constructed in accordance with my invention. The hone according to one form a rod-like body 10 which may be of rectangular or other suitable cross-section and formed with V grooves 12 in the ends M thereof, said grooves being parallel to each other and straddling a plane of symmetry containing the troughs 16 thereof, and the beveled faces 18 of said grooves preferably having substantially the same inclination to the respective sides 88 of the hone body that the beveled face 62 of the stop 53 has to the adjacent side 60 of the holder body 30.
The edge 32 of the arm 24 is normally spaced from the side 60 of the holder body 30 and from the bottom 84 of the beveled face 62 of the stop 50 a distance slightly in excess of the correof my invention comprises sponding dimensions of the hone 70 so that the hone can be slipped readily into position such that the edges 82 and 86 of the holder ID are disposed in the V grooves 72. While the hone I0 is there held by the fingers of one hand, the screw 42 is turned by a screw driver in the direction to flex the arm 24 toward the holder body 30 until the beveled face 34 of the holder body is firmly clamped against the juxtaposed beveled face 78 of the hone and the hone accordingly is clamped against the side 60 of the holder body. It sometimes occurs, due to manufacturing tolerances, that the hone may be a few ten thousandths of an inch too short, as indicated by the dotted line 90 in Fig. 3, so that when the arm 24 is flexed toward the side 60 of the holder body 36], said arm would engage said side, without engagement of the clamping face 34 of said arm with the hone. To obviate this difficulty, the holder body 30 is recessed at 32 as above noted. With this construction, the arm 24 can be flexed beyond the plane of the holder face 60, sufficiently to insure clamping engagement of the beveled surface 34 of the arm 24 with a beveled face 18 of such shortened hone F6.
To release the hone 10, it is necessary to reversely rotate the screw 42 only a fraction of a turn, whereupon the hone can be removed. Due to the symmetry of the hone it], either of the two opposite sides 80 thereof may be selectively arranged at the outside, i. e., remote from the holder body 30, to perform on the work. The screw head 44 is preferably completely disposed within the confines of the holder body 39, and the free end of the screw shank 46 at its farthest does not protrude substantially beyond the arm 24, so that the screw at all times lies clear of the path of reciprocation of the working side 80 of the hone.
A hone of any other cross-section, for example a half-round hone such as is shown at 92 in Figs, and 6, or various triangular shapes, of which an example is shown at 94 in Figs. 7 and 8 and at 86 in Figs. 9 and 10, may be employed in conjunction with my holder. Such a hone has a single beveled face at each end thereof, said beveled faces having substantially the same inclination as the beveled faces 73 of the hone 7E). The homes 92, 94 and 96 are inserted, clamped in place by the beveled face 34 of the arm 24, and removed in the same way as is the hone it. The hone, whatever the form it may take, should be sufiiciently thick so that, when it 'is clamped to the holder, the arm 24 and the free end of the screw shank 46 lie clear of the path of reciprocation of the working side or portion of the hone.
The portions of the holder IE1 engaging the beveled faces of a hone according to my invention need not be beveled, but could be rounded or otherwise formed and yet afford ample clamping pressure, but beveled clamping faces on the hone holder, or at least one such face, located on the arm 24, are preferred because of the area of contact and to render unlikely breakage of the hone if made of stone or other relatively fragile material.
The hone may have other abrasive dust to called for.
Instead of employing a separate stop 58 secured to the holder, the holder could be made with an integral projection for that purpose.
It is apparent that I have provided holder and hone constructions of extreme simplicity and ease a surfacing of diamond or perform such work as is of assembly and disassembly, not likely to get out of order, and entirely suited for their intended functions.
Various modifications may suggest themselves to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention, and, hence, I do not wish to be restricted to the specific form shown or uses mentioned, except to the extent indicated in the appended claims.
Iclaim:
1. A honing device comprising a holder having end formations and an intermediate body with a flat side, one of said formations comprising a shank adapted to be held in a reciprocable socket of a filing machine or the like, a stop on said side adjacent said shank and having a beveled face forming with said side a V-notch diverging toward the other end of said body, the other formation comprising an extension of substantially reduced thickness relative to said body, said extension being substantially in the form of an inverted U when said shank is lowermost, the free arm of said extension being spaced from and overlapping said body at said side and substantially spaced from said stop, said arm having a beveled end face facing said side and diverging from said side toward said shank, said side and said beveled faces affording substantially a dovetail formation, said arm and said body having aligned holes, said hole in said arm being threaded, the other hole bein enlarged at the side of said body opposite the aforesaid side, a headed screw in the hole of said body and threaded in the hole of said arm, said arm being resiliently flexible about the bight of said U toward said body in response to rotation of said screw in one direction and away from said body in response to rotation of said screw in the opposite direction, and a hone shorter than said holder and having two opposite parallel flat sides extending substantially throughout the length of said hone, one side of said hone being in substantial contact with the first mentioned side of said body, said hone having symmetrical parallel V-grooves completely across and at the ends of and normal to the axis of said hone, each groove diverging away from the other, the inclination of the faces of said grooves and the inclined faces of said stop and arm being substantially uniform relative to the first mentioned side of said body, said arm, when relaxed, being spaced from the first mentioned side of said body a distance sufficient to enable said hone to be passed freely into and out of position to be clamped by said arm, with a face of one groove between said body and said arm, and with a face of the other groove between said body and said stop, said screw being adjusted to firmly clamp said hone against said body.
2. A hone holder comprising end formations and an intermediate body with a fiat side, one of said formations comprising a shank adapted to be held in the reciprocable socket of a filing machine or the like, a stop on said side adjacent said shank and having a beveled face forming with said side a V-notch diverging toward the other end of said body, the other end formation comprising an extension relative to said body, said extension being substantially in the form of an inverted U when said shank is lowermost, the free arm of said extension being spaced from and overlapping said body at said side and substantially spaced from said stop, said arm having a beveled end face facing said side and diverging from said side toward said shank, said side and said beveled faces affording substantially a dovetail formation, said arm and said body having aligned holes, said hole in said arm being threaded, the other hole being enlarged at the side of said body opposite the aforesaid side, and a headed screw in the hole of said body and threaded in the hole of said arm, said arm being resiliently flexible about the bight of said U toward said body in response to rotation of said screw in one direction and away from said body in response to rotation of said screw in the opposite direction.
3. A honing device comprising a hone holder comprising end formations and an intermediate body with a flat side, one of said formations comprising a shank adapted to be held in the reciprocable socket of a filing machine or the like, a stop on said side adjacent said shank and having a beveled face forming with said side a -notch diverging toward the other end of said body, the other end formation comprising an extension relative to said body, said extension being substantially in the form of an inverted U when said shank is lowermost, the'free arm of said extension being spaced from and overlapping said body at said side and substantially spaced from said stop, said arm having a beveled end face facing said side and diverging from said side toward said shank, said side and said beveled faces affording substantially a dovetail formation, said arm and said body having aligned holes, said hole in said arm being threaded, the other hole being enlarged at the side of said body opposite the aforesaid side, and a headed screw in the hole of said body and threaded in the hole of said arm, said arm being resiliently flexible about the bight of said U toward the body in response to rotation of said screw in one direction and away from said body in response to rotation of said screw in the opposite direction, and a hone comprising a body having a fiat side in engagement with the firstmentioned side of said body, said hone having beveled ends defining with said flat side of said hone a substantially dovetail formation, with said beveled ends in engagement with the beveled faces of said stop and arm, respectively.
4. A hone holder comprising end formations and an intermediate body with a flat side, one of said formations comprising a shank adapted to be held in the reciprocable socket of a filing machine or the like, a stop on said side adjacent said shank and having a beveled face forming with said side a V-notch diverging toward the other end of said body, the other end formation comprising an extension relative to said body, said extension being substantially in the form of an inverted U when said shank is lowermost, the free arm of said extension being spaced from and, overlapping said body at said side and substantially spaced from said stop, said arm having a beveled end face facing said side and diverging from said side toward said shank, said side and said beveled faces affording substantially a dovetail formation, said arm and said body having aligned holes, said hole in said arm being threaded, the other hole being enlarged at the side of said body opposite the aforesaid side, anda headed screw in the hole of said body and threaded in the hole of said arm, said arm being resiliently flexible about thebight of said U to ward the body in response to rotation of said screw in one direction and away from said body in response to rotation of said screw in the opposite direction, said body at the first-mentioned side thereof being recessed adjacent said arm so as to enable said arm to be flexed toward said body beyond the plane of said first-mentioned side, whereby said beveled face on said arm is adapted to clampingly engage the beveled face of a hone which is too short to be engaged by said arm in the absence of said recess.
5. A hone holder comprising end formations and an intermediate body with a flat side, one of said formations comprising a shank adapted to be held in the reciprocable socket of a filing machine or the like, a stop on said side adjacent said shank and having a beveled face forming with said side a V-notch diverging toward the other end of said body, the other end formation comprising an extension relative to said body, said extension being substantially in the form of an inverted U when said shank is lowermost, the free arm of said extension being spaced from and overlapping said body at said side and substan-' tially spaced from said stop, said arm having a beveled end face facing said side and diverging from said side toward said shank, said side and said beveled faces afiording substantially a dovetail formation, said arm and said body having aligned holes, said hole in said arm. being threaded, the other hole being enlarged at the side of said body opposite the aforesaid side, and a headed screw in the hole of said body and threaded in the hole of said arm, said arm being resiliently flexible about the bight of said U toward the body in response to rotation of said screw in one direction and away from said body in response to rotation of said screw in the 0pposite direction, said body at the first-mentioned side thereof being recessed adjacent said arm so as to enable said arm to be flexed toward said body beyond the plane of said first-mentioned side, whereby said beveled face on said arm is adapted to clampingly engage the beveled face of a hone which is too short to be engaged by said arm in the absence of said recess, and a hone comprising a body having a flat side in engagement with the first mentioned side of said body, said hone having beveled ends defining with said flat side of said hone a substantially dovetail formation, with said beveled ends in engagement with the beveled faces of said stop and arm, respectively.
