This invention relates to a rivet bucker primarily adapted for use in installing the rivets for brake linings, although the same may have other uses.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a tool of the character aforesaid by means of which a rivet may be held in position under pressure while the end thereof is upset to lock the same in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool of the character aforesaid which is capable of supporting itself on the work being riveted, and which is adjustable in a universal manner to adapt the same for use with work of varying sizes and shapes.
To the foregoing objects,'an'd others which may hereinafter more fullyappear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawings, and first to Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, the numeral Ill designates generally a clamping head, which is formed with an upper cross bar H, having depending from the opposite ends thereof a pair of arms 12, provided with elongated slots iii. The bar II has extending forwardly therefrom a pair of divergent jaw supporting arms [4, having extending downward- 1y from the forward end thereof work clamping jaws IS.
A rivet engaging jaw l6, having a cap I! formed integral therewith, or secured thereto, is threadably mounted on the forward end of a threaded lever, or bar l8. The lever, or bar l8 5 Claims. (01. 78-535) is threaded through ablock, or nut l9, disposed between the depending arms l2 and therblock, or nut l9, engages between a pair .of adjustable blocks 20, havingopenings 2|. transversely therethrough, through aselected one of which a pin 22, extending through the arm-l2, is adapted to engage. In this manner each block 2il=may be adjustably supported lengthwise of a slot I3.
Th nut, or block l9, is rockably supported from the blocks by means of a 'air of aligned screws 23, which'are extended loosely through.
Referring now to Figures 5 to 8; inclusive, the
numeral l0 designates generally a head, which is formed of a cross bar Il having depending from the opposite ends-thereof a pair of depending arms l2 formed with:elongated slots H The cross bar ll also has extending forwardly therefrom a pair'of divergent-jaw supporting arms 14, and a workclamping. jaw l5 depends from the forward ends of each divergent arm M A rivet engaging head, or jaw Ili disposed between the jaws IS and has formed integral therewith,=or secured thereto, a cap Il which is threaded on the forward end of an elongated tubular lever l8. The lever I8 is slidable through a sleeve 26 and is adaptedto be adjusted lengthwise of the sleeve 26 by means of a locking pin 21,*-engaging"throu'gh a selected opening 28 formed' -in'the sleeve 26, and also through a selected'opening 29, which is formed in the tubular lever, or bar 18. i I
Preferably the bar l8 is formed with diametrically opposed openings 29 within which the pin 21 is adapted to engage. The outer end of the pin 21 may be-form'ed with a knurled head 30 to facilitate removing, 'or'replacement, of the pin in selected openings of the sleeve 26 and the bar, orlever l8. I
The sleeve 26 is rockably supported between a pair of adjustably positioned blocks .3I, which loosely engage in the slots Il and the blocks 3| are formed with holes 32, within a selected one of which a locking pinv 33, engaging transversely through an arm l2 is adapted to extend. The sleeve, 26 is rockably supported between the blocks v3| by means of a pair of pins 34, which are extended through holes 35, formed in the blocks 3| and the inner ends of the pins 3G loosely engage in holes 36, which are formed in the sleeve 26.
In the use of the tool. the arms I 4 ar positioned over the work with the members l5 abutting the forward face thereof. The blocks 20 are adjusted vertically of the legs l2 by means of the pins 22 so as to position the work contacting member l6 at approximately the same height as the rivet, or the like, to be operated upon. The lever [B is threadably adjusted lengthwise of nut l9, and is initially disposed with the free end above the horizontal with the member [6 in contact with the rivet head. Upon depressing the lever, the member l6 forces the rivet, or the like,
through the work and maintains a pressure there on whilebeing clenched, or otherwis upon, at the forward face of the work.
What I claim is: g 1. A rivet bucking tool comprising a head, in-
e operated eluding a cross bar, having a leg depending from each end thereof, each of said legs having an elongated slot, said head further including a pair of forwardly extending diverging arms terminating at their forward ends in down turned abutregistry with each other, and a pin for extension through registered bores in the sleeve and lever for adjustably connecting them together,
3. A rivet bucking tool, comprising a head, including a. cross bar having a leg depending from each end thereof, a pair of arms extending forwardly from said cross bar and terminating indown turned abutment members adapted to engage one face of a relatively thin piece of work, a
