OTTO HOFFMAN AT TO RN Y Patented Dec. 30, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SCOURIN G DEVICE Otto Homan, Portland, Oreg.
Application November 2, 1945, Serial No. 626,338
1 Claim. l
This invention relates to scouring pads and is particularly adapted to be used in the cleansing y of pots, pans and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to use standard wire screen for the main body portion of the pad, this screen being arranged and folded so as to provide smooth outer edges coming in Contact with the hands of the user, and a rough or bristle like end for contacting the pans to be scoured, the folded screen being held in assembled position by mounting or impregnating one of its ends with a binding and covering agent, as for instance cement or rubber.
Another object of my invention is to provide means within the scouring pads to maintain a rough scouring edge as the pad is used throughout the life of the pad.
These and other incidental objects will be apparent in the drawings, specification and claim.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 illustrates my new and improved scouring pad wherein the wire screen is shown as being folded to create a thickness of several layers of screen and at the same time folding the edges so as to assure a smooth outer edge coming in contact with the hands of the user.
Figure 2 illustrates the screen having been folded and being dipped into a vat containing a binding and sealing solution for holding the layers of screen together, which also provides a covering protection to the hands of the user.
Figure 3 illustrates the iinished pad in perspective.
Figure4 is a sectional view, taken on line 4 4 of Figure 3 looking in the direction indicated.
Figure 5 is an end view clarifying the method of folding the screen.
In the drawings:
The pad consists of a screen I, folded along the edges 2, 3, 4 and 5. When the screen is cut out of the stock the edges 6, l, 8 and 9 would be in a raw or ragged condition, The edges 8 and 9, as illustrated in Figure 1, can be folded inwardly adjacent the turned edges 3 and 4, pre' venting the said two rough edges from appearing o-n the outside of the completed pad, thereby protecting the hands of the user along the edges 3 and il.
When the end I0 of the folded screen I I is submerged into the binding agent I2, contained within a suitable vat I3. the layers of screen .are bound together holding the pad to the shape as best illustrated in Figures 3 and 4, at the same time eliminating the rough edge l. I do not wish to be limited to the above method of applying the binding strip I5, as other methods of applying a binding agent may be used, still carrying out the object of my invention relative to this feature.
On the opposite end of the pad it is desirable to have the roughened edge 6 remain exposed as this is the edge that contacts the pans to be scoured, and as the pad is used one of the outstanding features is that the cross wires Ill may be removed providing a multiplicity of rough edge bristles 6 throughout the life of the pad. This is an outstanding feature of my new and improved scouring pad.
From the above description it will be noted that a relatively thin pad is maintained, providing the proper flexibility for the most eicient scouring of pans, permitting the pad to enter the corners and out of the way places that heretofore have not been properly scoured. This can be accomplished by my pad due to its thinness of construction which will allow the pad to be used' in the corners of the pan by aligning the edge of the pad parallel with the corners and at the same time providing a pad that will cover a Wide area at each stroke in the scouring operation.
I do not wish to be limited to the exact structure as illustrated, as other means of folding and binding the edges may be used still coming within the scope of my claim.
I claim:
A scouring or like pad formed from a single piece of wire metal screen composed of longitudinal and transverse strands, two of the opposite sides of said screen being folded inwardly toward each other and intermediately folded outwardly in opposite directions providing a series of overlapping screen sections, the lower ends of the strands of wire of the sections extending normally beyond the lowermost transverse wire strands, to form a series of scraping edges, and a hand grip secured to the upper ends of the sections.
