CORPORATION OF NEW SCOUBING DEVICE.
"Application filed November 17, 1922. Serial No. 601,477.
and more particularly to devices of this kind used for cleaning or scouring pots and pans or the like. Such devices are commonly made in the form of gloves fitting over the hand of the user, and the fabric of the gloves is composed of spaced threads, .the threads running in one direction being surrounded entirely or partly by thin strands of sheet metal, say copper. These threads, for reasons of effectiveness during use of the article, are spaced relatively far apart, and consequently the finger-tips of the person using such glove will come in contact with the object to be scoured, through the loose meshes of the fabric and are thus liable to be soiled. Moreover, gloves have the disadvantage that they are made to surround the whole hand, while, as a matter of fact, only a very small portion of the glove will be used, viz, that portion which lies between the finger-tips and the object to be scoured.
It is the purpose of the present invention to overcome these drawbacks, and I have attained this object by devising an article in which a sufficient thickness of material and preferably several layers of fabric are interposed between the finger tips of the person, using it and the object to be scoured, and in which the space for the insertion of the fingers is just sufficient for the purpose to be accomplished. These objects and the advantages of my invention will appear fully from the description following hereinafter, and the novel features will be pointed out in the appended claims.
Without desiring to restrict myself to the details shown, .I have illustrated in the accompanying-drawings a preferred embodiment of my invention. In these drawings, Fig. 1 is a iectanguler piece of fabric from .which the device is constructed; Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate successive steps in the construction of a preferred form thereof; Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3 and Figs. 5 and 6 are face views showing'inner and outer layers of the completed device when made as in the illustrated example.
The material from which the device is constructed comprises spaced cotton threads 10 running in-one direction and spaced metal-containing threads 11 running in a transverse direction, said threads 10 and 11 being woven together to form a relatively open Weave or open mesh fabric. The metal may be combined with the threads 11 in any convenient manner as for instance by spiralli Winding strips of metal about the same as s own; in some cases the threads 11 may be composed entirely of metal.
When completed, the device comprises what may be termed a pocket of such size as to accommodate the fingers of the user, but of'less depth than the distance between the finger-tips and the knuckles on the back of the hand. The device is preferably of tapering form, that is with the side edges converging toward one end and is of sufficient textural density to prevent contact between the fingers and the object to be scoured; thus as shown the device may be of triangular shape, it being understood however that this is only representative of equivalent forms.
When constructed, as in the illustrated example, a rectangular piece of the fabric, such as shown, for instance in Fig. 1, is folded along a diagonal 12'of the rectangle, into the triangle 13 shown in Fig. 2. This triangular folded fabric is then folded upon itself on the line 14 to form another triangle 15 of half the size of the first triangle, as shown in Fig. 3. One set of contacting edges, for instance the edges 16, are then sewed. or otherwise secured together, while the connecting edges 17 are left free and open to permit the fingers to be inserted into the resulting pocket 18. With the described arrangement the device consists of two sets of double layers of fabric a and b lying one within the other to form a twoply device; it will be noted that the metalcontaining'threads 11 in one layer or ply run transversely and at approximately right angles tothe corresponding threads of the contiguous layer as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. v This arrangement not only gives the desired textural density but also disposes the threads, and more particularly the metal-containing threads 11, in the most etficient relation.
It will, of course, be understood that, if
desired, the number of layers of material included in the pocket may be other than as shown in the illustrated example. The device is particularly useful for scouring pots, pans and the like and by fitting over the finger-ends alone insures a freedom of action and flexibility which enables the user to reach all parts of the article being scoured, with a minimum of effort, so that the scouring action is positive and efficient.
Various changes in the specific form illustrated and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A scouring device composed of metal containing fabric comprising outer layers of such fabric of suflicient combined textural density to prevent contact between the.
gers between adjacent layers of the two sets.
3. A scouring device made by folding a rectangular piece of metal-containing fabric first along a diagonal of the rectangle into triangular shape, then folding the resulting triangle to form another triangle of half the size of the first triangle, and then sewing one set of contacting edges together, but leaving the other set of edges open to form a pocket for the insertion of the users fingers.
4;. A scouring device made of a rectangular piece of fabric having spaced metal-containing threads in one direction and spaced cotton threads in .the other direction, said piece of fabric being folded into a plurality of layers in such a way that the metal-covered threads of an outer layer and those of the adjacent inner layer cross each other, said layers being connected along a plurality of edges and disconnected along another edge to provide a pocket adjacent to said second-named layer for the insertion of the users fingers.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
RUSSELL B. KIN-GMAN.
