2 Claims. (CL 2158) This invention relates to a covering for the hand for use during the treatment of the skin of the hand whereby the ointment or lotion used is held in the desired place so as to secure the desired 5 result.

An object of the. invention is to provide a covering for the hand in the general form of a mitten which may be applied without any appreciable sliding or relative movement of the hand or the l covering.

Another object of the invention is to provide a. covering that may be applied to the hand or removed without appreciably disturbing any ointment or lotion previously applied to the hand, the

l structure being such that when in use it will not only cover the hand but will permit the thumb and ngers to relax so as to permit a normal flow of blood throughout the hand.

The mitten shown in the drawing may be made from knit material or woven material as preferred, but preferably from light material which is yielding and also comparatively soft. 'I'he yarn used in making the mitten may be silk, cotton,

rayon, or other suitable material.

In forming the mitten there is provided a body I which at one end merges into the wrist section 2 and at the other end into a rectangular finger section or cot 3 which is closed at the end 4 as well as at the sides and back. Preferably integral with the body I are the thumb and

little finger cots

From the drawing it will be seen that the thumb cot 5 extends from the side of the mitten at an angle substantially equal to a fortyflve degree angle from a longitudinal central line drawn through the mitten. Also the thumb cot 5 is closer to the wrist section 2 than the little finger cot 6. It will be noted also from Figs. I

4.3 and 2 that the little finger cot 6 is at an appreciably less angle than the thumb cot. This is to permit the various fingers to properly relax.

The cot 3 is sufciently large to'permit the three rst fingers to separate Slightly if desired.

50 In case the thumb and all of the fingers are moved into contact with each other, there is a slight strain between all the fingers and thumb.

This is particularly true of the thumb and little finger. In case the hand is laid on a ilat support c5 and allowed to relax properly, it will be noted that the thumb will move to almost a forty-ve degree angle and the little linger will separate from the next nger. 5 and 6 accomodate this automatic relaxing action of the hand. 'l'he three other fln- 5 gers move slightly apart and particularly the first finger moves slightly away from the second nger. This action is accommodated by the width of the cot 3.

As shown in Fig. 2, the wrist part 2, body i and l0 part of cot 3 are divided or formed with an opening extending from the wrist end of the mitten to substantially centrally of the cot 3. The sides of the opening are connected by a suitable slide fastener 1, although other fastening means could l5 be used without departing from the spirit of the invention. If desired the opening and slide fastener could extend almost to the closed end 4, although ordinarily this is not necessary. However, the opening preferably extends beyond the 20 end of the thumb 'cot 5 and to a point almost equal to the end of the small finger cot 6. The idea of having a long opening of this kind is to permit the hand to be inserted into the mitten with substantially no relative sliding movement between the 25 hand and the mitten.

When using the mitten the hand is covered or treated as desired with a lotion or ointment and naturally the lotion or ointment is placed at the points desired or over the entire hand. It is de- 30 sired that this lotion or ointment shall remain in place until it has performed its function. Where an ordinary glove is used there is a relative sliding movement between the hand and the glove. This will scrape 0H or move the ointment away 35 from the places to be treated. By the construction shown in the accompanying drawing the mitten is laid wide open and the three rst fingers are loosely placed in the cot 3 while the thumb and little finger are inserted into the

5 and 6. 40 The side portions 8 and 9 of the body and associated sections are then folded over to a substantially closed position and the fastener 'I caused to function to complete the closing action and to hold the mitten in its closed position. By this construction the wrist section 2 may be made to rather snugly t the wrist without causing the removal of any of the ointment. However, the entire hand and part of the wrist are covered so that the bed clothes when the device is used at night will not be soiled and yet the treatment will form its desired function. The treatment will also take place with the various parts of the hand including the ngers and thumb in a relaxed condition. While normally the hand in the mitten is allowed 56 to relax as much as possible, sometimes it may be necessary to grasp an object and when this occurs the thumb and little nger may be brought together readily for this purpose.
