UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOSEPH P. BASS, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
MACHINE FOR BURNISHING PHOTOGRAPHS.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,349, dated June 28, 1881.
Application filed May 9,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH P. BASS, of Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Burnishing Photographs and Like Articles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows a side elevation; Fig. 2, a detail of the post; Fig. 3, modification, partially in section.
Same letters show like parts.
My invention consists of an improved burnishing-machine for photographs, 850., of that class in which the article to be burnished is fed over a non-rotating burnishing-tool by means of a feeding-roll.
The object of my invention is to enable the feed-roll to be readily removed from its position over the burnishing-tool when the same is being heated, thereby obviating any danger of condensation or moisture upon the roll during the process, and also to provide an easy method of removing the roll from the machine when repairs become necessary.
My invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which is shown an ordinary burnishing-machine of the class named, having base a, posts I) 1), adjusting device 0, burnishing plate and tool (I, and roll 0, with its crankf. The journals {1 h of the machine carrying the feed-roll in my improvement are not made a part of the posts I) b, as usual; but one of said journals, g, at one end of the roll, is attached to its post by a hinge or joint, while the otherjournal forms with its post a lock-joint, by which the roll is secured in position when in use.
One form of my invention is shown in Fig. 1. In this the journals are provided with projections l l, fitting slots at in the posts I), and secured therein by pins 12, passing through holes in both posts and projections, the pin securing the journal 9 serving as a joint or hinge, enabling the roll to be elevated to a perpendicular position, while the pin securing the journal It operates to lock it in position when in use. (See detail.)
A modification of my invention consists in constructing the projection of the journal '9 in the form of a stud round in cross-section, projecting downward, and fitting a round hole in the top of the post I). This stud, being secured in said post in such a manner as to permit its turning therein, forms a vertical joint or pivot at one end of the feed-roll, permitting said roll to be swung laterally from its position over the roll. The lock may be substantially the same as before described, allowance being made for the difference in the action of the hinges orjoints.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise construction of the hinges or locking devices herein described, as the details may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention. When the locking-pin has been removed and the roll swung away from the plate, its arbor can be readily withdrawn from thejournal g, detaching it from the machine, and enabling it to be sent away for repairs. The handle can be removed, as usual, freeing it from the arbor It, which, when removed, leaves the roll entirely detached from any other part of the burnishing-machine.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- 1. Ina burnishing-machine,the combination of the burnishing-tool d with the feed-roll c, hinged or pivoted to the standards of said machine atone end, and provided with a locking device at the other extremity, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a burnishing-machine, the posts I) b, in combination with the journals g h, carrying the feed-roll c, and provided with projections l, by which they are secured to said posts or standards, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand this 5th day ot May, 1881.
Josnrn r. BASS.
