1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to improvements in chases for printing presses and the like and is directed more particularly to improvements in mechanism for locking type forms, electrotypes and the like in place where the same occupy less space than the open space in the chase.
We are aware that it has been attempted to lock type or the like in place in a chase which occupies less space than the opening in the chase but mechanisms of the prior art include members that engage with the chase members or parts of the mechanism interlock or fit with the parts of the chase. This makes it necessary not only to provide a chase of special form which is costly but the interfitting parts determine in what portion of the chase opening the type must be located which is objectionable. And prior art mechanism may only be used with chases which are formed or arranged for the use thereof.
According to this invention, means is provided which may be used with any prior art or standard chase thereby eliminating the necessity of chases having special forms for cooperating with the mechanism.
Various novel features and advantages of the invention will be observed from the following description of the form of the invention at present preferred.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a chase having the novel features of the invention associated there with;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the transverse members forming a part of the mechanism of the invention; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a longitudinal member of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings more in detail, the invention will be fully described.
A chase is represented by 2 which has longitudinal side members 4 and transverse end members 6 secured together to provide the usual opening.
A longitudinal member 3 preferably of metal is provided which may extend between the end members of the chase.
A pair of transverse members I!) are of a length to extend between the longitudinal members 4 of the chase. These have on their lower sides a plurality of grooves l2 which are formed to snugly receive the longitudinal member 8.
When it is desired to lock a type form such as M in the chase the longitudinal member 8 is placed in the chase which is placed on a table and the transverse members I U are located thereover with certain grooves thereof receiving the member 8.
The ends of the members 8 and I0 although adjacent the longitudinal and transverse members of the chase are not connected thereto. In this way the members In may be located at any point longitudinally of the members 4. Likewise the member 8 may be located at any point transversely where there are grooves in the members ID. This makes it possible to locate the opening for the type form It Where desired in the chase opening, and a chase of special form is not necessary.
The type form I 4 has adjacent sides against adjacent portions of the members 8 and i0 and blocking I6 is located between the members iii and end members 6 of the chase, preferably near the ends of the members I0.
The blocking l6 limits separating movements of the members l0 and other blocking I8 and 20 is located against the member I!) at the ri ht and member 4 of the chase. Keys or quoins 22 are located between the blocking I8 and 2B and the type form l4. These keys are of usual construction and are operated in the usual way to expand and exert pressure between the type form and adjacent parts.
The members II] are held against movement by the blocking I6 and the member 8 is held by the said members In so that the type form is locked against the adjacent portions of the members 8 and Ill,
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
The combination of a chase formed by secured together transverse end and longitudinal side members each having vertically disposed fiat inner faces providing a central type opening of a certain size and having inner continuous unbroken vertical faces with means cooperating therewith to provide a. relatively smaller type opening comprising, a pair of transverse members extending between said longitudinal side members hav- 3 o ing parallel unbroken longitudinal sides and fiat opposite end faces in sliding engagement with the unbroken inner faces thereof and provided with spaced aligned grooves having parallel and opposite side faces in parallelism with the inner vertical faces of the longitudinal side members for receiving and holding a longitudinal member against movement transversely of the chase, a separate longitudinal member having parallel opposite side faces receivable in the aligned grooves of the transverse members and having fiat opposite end faces in engagement with the unbroken inner faces of the transverse end members, type blocking members between opposite ends of said transverse members and adjacent transverse end members of the chase and spacing said transverse members from said transverse end members and preventing separating movements of the transverse members, said transverse and separate longitudinal members in cooperation with a longitudinal side member of the chase forming said smaller type opening.
