Thisinvention relates to certain improvements in devices for printing edition headings and the like, and such devices combinedl with a margin bar.
In printing edition headings or the like, it is frequently desirableto print such headings inthe margin space between two plates, where suchplates arearranged around the cylinder, this margin space extending widthwise lof the cylinder. It is also desirable in printing machines that this space between the lplatesl be filled with a bar or the like, known as a margin bar, for effecting a satisfactory operation of the machine. Ihere, however, it was desired to print in these spaces, the margin bar was either removed and a special form was placed in the cylinder or a plate of special size was used. This necessitated the removal and replacement ofthe margin bar, and was otherwise unsatisfactory.
It is a special object of thepresent invention toproduce a device for printing in the margin space between two plates which does not necessitate the removal of the margin bar, the printing device being combined with the bar, and when not used being removed therefrom, the bar remaining in place.
Itis a further object of the invention to produce a mechanism of this kind in which the printing element may be readily placed in and removed from position, and in which the margin bar is resiliently seated so that there is no damage liable to'occur to the bar or the plates if the plates are not accurately seated onthe cylinder.`
- With these and-other objects not specifically referred to, the invention consists in cer tain novel parts, arrangements and combinations which will be 'described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in the claims hereunto y appended.

Referring now to these drawings, the invention has' been shown as employed in a printing machinein which theI form carrier '-0 is a cylinder carrying two plates around. It will be understood, however, that as to some of its features the invention is applicable to form carriers other than cylinders, and the use of the device is not to be limited to rotary "5 machines. In the construction illustrated, the form carrier is a cylinder 1 mounted on a shaft Q, and is shown as capacitated to carry two printing plates around, marked 3, 4. Between these plates on each side of the cylinder are gaps, these gaps being/indicated at 5, which form the margin spaces between the plates. 'Ihese` plates are, or may be, locked up on the cylinder with the usual sliding clamps or clips, vthree of these clips being shown, 6, 7 S. The particular cylinder illustrated is capacitated to carry four plates wide, the plates on the left-hand side of the cylinder only being shown, it being understood that the parts may be duplicated on each side of the cylinder, and the inner plates are marked 9, 10. IVhere this construction is adopted, the inner plates are clamped against a fixed stop 11, movable clamps 12 being located between the plates, as shown in Fig. 2. y In accordance with the invention, means are provided for 4printing certain matter, as edition headings,- in the space between the plates 3, 4, or the plates 9, 10, these means eing shown as 'printing in the space 'between we the outer plates 3, 4, and in constructions embodying the invention, the printing element will be combined with a margin bar so that the element may be removed and placed in printed position in the bar, the bar remaining in position in the machine. While various constructions may be adopted for effecting this, as illustrated, the wall of the cylinder 1 between the plates, at the gaps is cut away to form grooves or slots 13, in which are positioned margin bars 14. The bars are held in position in the grooves preferably so that they may have a yielding movement, so that if a plate is wrongly positioned on the cylinder and overlaps the bar the bar may be depressed without any injury to the parts. As shown, the bars are provided at each end with projecting ledges which underlie flanges 16 on blocks 17 which are secured in the ends of the grooves by screws 18, see Fig. 2, The Wall of the cylinder is also provided with vertical slots 19 which receive springs 2O which bear against the under side of the bars, so that the bars have a yielding vertical movement in the slots, the upward movement of the bars being limited by the stop flanges 16.
These bars are, in the particular construction used, between the plates and extend widthwise of the cylinder, and one or all of these bars, as desired, is formed to act as a carrier for the printing element by which is printed the edition headings or the like. While this printing element may be of various characters, in the particular construction ill' lustrated, it is in the form ot' a narrow bar or slug S cast of suitable metal and carries on its surface the required printing indicia. To receive this printing slug, the margin bar between the plates 3, 4 is formed with a narrow longitudinal groove 21, this groove being interrupted to snugly receive the slug, the slug seating on the bottom of the groove. The walls of the groove are provided with a transverse groove 22, and the slug is formed with a hole 23, see Fig. 4;, through which a wire or other tool may be inserted to lift the slug from the bar.
The slug is held in position in the bar in any suitable manner so that it will remain in position during the printing operation. While various devices may be adopted for this, in the particular construction shown, the slug is held under the tension of a spring, the spring acting to force the slug against the i front wall 24 of the groove in the bar. As
shown, the bar is provided with a. central recess 25, at the sides of which are arranged blocks 26, 27 which receive a holding rod 28, the blocks 26, 27 being held in the bar in any suitable manner, as by screws 29. This holding rod at the end engaging the slug is provided with a tapered end 30 which enters a socket 31 formed in the end of the slug behind the block 27. The rod has fast thereon a collar 32 formed with a socket 33. Between the collar 32 and the block 26 is arranged a spring 311, this spring normally forcing the rod to the left and firmly locking the slug in place in the bar.
For removing the slug, a tool 35, such as a wire, is inserted in the socket 33 of the collar and the collar is moved to the left, as shown in Fig. 6, this movement freeing the slug, which can then be readily removed from the slot by means of a wire inserted in the hole 23, before referred to.
With the construction described, it will be seen that a very efficient device has been provided for printing a small amount of matter in the margin space at the head of a plate, and one which does not require a special form of main plate or the removal of the margin bars. Furthermore, both the margin bar and the printing element are depressible, so that if a main plate is accidentally put on wrong on the cylinder neither the printing element nor the margin bar will be injured.
While the invention has been shown in its preferred form. it will be understood that it is useful in other relations than that described, and the specific form of the printing element and the mechanism for holding it in position may be varied within considerable limits without departing from the invention.
What I claim is:
1. In a printing machine, the combination of a cylinder, a margin bar in the cylinder wall, a longitudinal recess in the bar, a printing slug in the recess having an opening, a groove in the bar registering with the opening, and means for locking the slug in the recess.
2. In a printing machine, the combination of a plate support, a margin bar on the support, a recess in the bar, a printing form in the recess having a socket, a sliding pin engaging the socket, a spring cooperating with the pin, and a block on the pin having an aperture for receiving a tool, whereby the pin may be moved to free the pin from the socket.
3. In a printing machine, the combination of a cylinder, a margin bar in the cylinder wall, a longitudinal recess in the bar, a printing slug in the recess having a side opening, a groove in the bar registering with the opening, a notch in the end of the slug, and a removable spring pin engaging the notch for locking the slug in the recess.
