To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO EGGEBRECHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at omence, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soldering Attachments, ofwhich the following is a specification. r
This invention relates to a soldering attachment more especially designed and adapted for use in soldering type onto the type bars of a typewriter; and has for its object, to produce a device which will enable the type to be soldered to the type bars in such a manner that when the type bars are mountedin the typewriter, the type will be in exact alinement with one another; also, to provide means-for supportingthe type during the soldering operation, which means will be adjustable; to provide means so as to bring each type bar into the same exact relation with the type supporting means; and to provide means for locking the type carrier against; movement.
The invention further relates to the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the placing of type upon the type bars of a typewriter, difficulty has been experienced in placing the type so that when the type bar is assembled 1n the typewriter, the type will be in exact alinement and will all strike at the proper point upon the platen. If an error should be made in positioning the type upon the typebar, it will then be necessary, after the machineis assembled, to readjust the type so as to bring them in alinement, thus necessarily addin to the expense of construction of the mac ine.
Applicant has devised a means whereby each separate tiype bar of the bank of type oars is centere 1n exact relation to a type mpporting surface, so that when type has won aflixed to each type bar, the type on Lil of the bars will he in exact alinement vith one another, hence, when the type bars [1'8 mounted in the typewriter all of the ype will be in perfect alinement. The poitionof the type supporting surface is such hat the t pe, when lying thereon, will be in vroper re ation to the type bar, so that when mounted thereon it will strike at the proper oint on the platen when the type bar is type bars mounted mounted in operative position and actuated. By this method, the mounting of the type is a mechanical action and is'not dependent upon the skill of an operator to position the type in each instance at the proper point upon the type bar.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the assembled device, showing a bank of in proper relation thereto and showing one of the bars, in the dotted lines, swung into position to receive a type; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section'of Fig. l; and Figs. 3 and at, enlarged details of the mechan1sm for adjusting the type supporting surfaces.
The device is mounted upon a base 4, of suitable shape and size, and comprises a type carrier 5, which; as shown, is in the form of a rotatable disk. The type carrier is provided with a plurality of radially extending slots 6, into each of which is entered a type supporting member 7. The type supporting member, as shown, consists of an elongated block 8, provided with a trans versely extending groove 9, and also adjacent either side of the groove with matrices 10, corresponding to the characters on the type. The type supporting member is beveled at its inner and outer ends 11;. and mounted in the type carrier are adjusting members '12, which, as shown, are in the form of ordinary screws. The bevel on each end of the type slipporting member is parallel to the bevel on the head of the screw, so that, as is more clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, by depressing one of the screws and raising the other, the beveled surfaces of the heads of the screws will act to force the type supporting member in the direction desired within its slot, thus making this supporting member adjustable, so that it may be moved nearer or farther from the center of the type carrier, which adjusts the position of a type 12 carried thereon, so that when any type bar is brought intoposition to receive the type, at the proper point.
As shown in Fig. 1, the type carrier is provided with a groove 13, which extends between the grooves 9 in the type supporting members. This groove will serve as an indicator in the adjusting of the type supporting members, so member may be positioned in alinement with the type will rest against the barthat each supporting the rest. That is, if it becomes necessary to adjust the supporting members a thirtysecond of an inch toward the center of the type carrier, by observing the relation of the groove 9 to the groove 13, all of the members may be positioned in alinement with one another without the necessity of measuring the exact distance which each individual supporting member should be moved. The type carrier is provided, around its periphery 14, with a plurality of notches or recesses 15; and these recesses cooperate with a movable locking member 16 to form a means for centering the type carrier after each movement of the carrier necessary to bring the various type' supporting members into proper relation with the type bars. The movable locking member 16 is actuated by a handle 17 and is of the ordinary and well known type, so that a detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary. The type carrier is formed with a bearing stud orpost 18, which is entered into a recess 19 in the base 4:. The mechanism for supporting and holding the type bars is as follows: A plate 20, formed with a longitudinally extending slot 21, is positioned toward the front of the base 4: and, as shown, is in substantial alinement with the center of thetype carrier 5. Entered into the slot 21 is a locking member 22 having an enlarged head 23 thereon; and the locking member is adjustably mounted within the base plate 4, as shown in Fig. 2. Extending into the slot 21 is a stud 24, which acts as a stop member to bring the plate- 20 into proper position to clamp a frame 25 containing type bars, and, as shown in Fig. 1, a plurality ofpins 26 are provided, which serve as a means for properly centering the plate. The frame 25 carries a plurality of type bars 27 which, in the form shown, are provided with pins 28, and when the type bars are swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the pins 28 will enter into a hole 29 formed in a plate 30 attached to the base plate 4.
It is, of course, obvious that the invention is in no way limited to the use of this particular type bar or frame, as various forms of bars and frames could be employed without departing in any way from the spirit of the invention. The bars and frame shown in Fig. 1 are merely for illustrative purposes.
The operation is as follows: The type are first placed upon the type supporting members 7, the matrices in the supporting members corresponding to the characters upon the type, so that each supporting member carries a particular type. The type carrier is then rotated until the type which is to be mounted upon the first type bar lying to the left hand side of the bank of bars shown in Fig. 1 is brought into alinement with the hole 29. The type bar is then swung over and the pin 28 will enter the hole 29 and center the type. The type carrying portion of the type bar will then rest upon the type and will be in proper position to have the solder applied to unite the type to the type bar. The type carrier will then be rotated until the next adjacent notch 15 inthe periphery of the type carrier is brought into engagement with the movable lockingmember 16, at which time the next adjacent type will be in alinement with the hole 29, and the second type, bar will then be swung and the type afiixed thereto in the manner previously described. This operation will be repeated with the various bars of the bank of bars until type has been affixed to each individual bar, and by arranging the matrix on the type supporting members, so that the type mounted thereon will be in the same re ative order that they would be when mounted in the type-writer, the securing of the type to the bars can be performed very rapidly, because the type upon the first supporting member will be the type that belongs on the first type bar, the type on the second member the one that belongs on the second bar, and so on throughout the bank of bars. In this way no delay is occasioned in the selection of the proper type to place upon the bars, and, at the same time, the alinement of the type will be, for all practical purposes, perfect.
I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a type supporting member, means for centering type bars to bring the type carrying portlon of each bar into the same position with respect to the type supporting member, and means for adjusting the type supporting-member, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the classdescribed, the combination of a movable type supporting member, and means for centering type bars to bring the type carrying portion of each bar into the same position with respect to the type supporting member when the type supporting member is brought into alinement with the type carrying portion of the type bar, substantially as described. 7
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a type supporting member, a mounting for type bars, permittingthem to be moved into and out of alinement with the type supporting member, and means for centering the type bars to bring the type carrying portion ofeach bar into the same position with respect to the type supporting the type supporting member, means for centering the type bars to bring the type carrying portion of each bar into the same position with respect to the type supporting member when the bar is brought into alinement -With the supporting member, and means for adjusting the type supporting member, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a movable type supporting member, means for centering type bars to bring the type carrying portion of each bar into the same position with respect to the type supporting member when the type sup porting member is brought into alinement with the type carrying position ofthe type bar, and means for adjusting the type supporting member, substantially as described.

16. In a device of the class described, the combination of a movable type carrier, and a plurality of type supporting members mounted upon said carrier, provided adjacent to their ends with matrices corresponding to the characters on the type, and provided with transversely extending grooves intermediate the matrices, the type carrier being formed with grooves extending between the grooves in the type supporting members, substantially as described.
