ROCKING CRIB.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters vPatent No. 243,259, dated June 21, 1881.
Application filed May 12, 1881.
To all whom "it may concern Beit known that I, JOHN F.HORNBERGER, of Lawrenceburg, in the county of Dearborn and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Rocking Crib, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a crib pivoted to two end standards, one or both of which are provided with a spiral clock-spring with winding attachments, a crank on the central pin or shaft ofthis spring being detachably connected ing of the clock-spring rocks the crib and swings the fan. The pivots of the cradle are held in their bearings by spring-latches.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal elevation of myimproved rocking crib. Fig. 2 isa crosssectional elevation of the same on the line :0 ac, Fig.1. Fig. 3is a horizontal sectional View on the line 3 y, Fig. 1, showing the spring-latch of the pivot of the crib. Fig. at is a detail view of a modification of the fanoperating devices.

The end pieces of the crib A will be provided with pivotsB B, acting in suitable bearings, G G, of the standards D D, which are united by the braces or longitudinal rails D D to form a strong and rigid frame. One or both of the standards D are provided with a circular or other opening or recess containing a powerful circular clock-spring, E, provided with a cen tral pin, F, with a squared outer end, upon which a crank-key for winding or coiling the spring fits. This pin F of the spring E is provided at the inner end with a crank, G, having a pin or stud, G, at its outer end. The end of this crank G is connected with thecorresponding end piece of the cribA bya connecting-Tod, H, fitting on a stud, I, at or near the edge of the end piece of the crib. The ends of this connecting-rod Hare provided with recesses or notches J, into which the pins on the end of the crank G and on the end piece of the crib fit, thus permitting this connecting-rod to be removed at will. fan-frame, N, for holding a fan of paper, cloth, or metal, is loosely mounted on the rod K, so that it can slide thereon, the upper end bar of this frame being provided with a spring-latch, O, which catches in one of the notches K of the rod K, and thus locks the fan in any de* sired position on the rod K. A latch, P, with a stud or pin at the end, is pivoted to the standard D, and is used to lock the crank G when it is desired that both the crib and the fan shall not swing. A connecting-rod, S, provided with a notch, J, at its upper end, is provided with a longitudinal slot, T, in its lower end, and is provided with pins V at the ends of this slot, these pins resting on the edge of the cam R. The shaft F passes through the slot T. The upper end of the rod S is hooked on the projection L at the end of the crank L. The cam will hold the fan in acertain' position for acertain length of time, and will then give it a quick motion over the crib, and consequently will make more wind than if arranged in the manner previously described.
The operation is as follows The spring E is wound up by a key, and as this spring unco'ils it rotates its pin F and the crank G, and asthe latter is connected with the crib H this crib will be rocked to and fro, as will also the fan-rod K and the fan thereon, as the crank L of this fan-rod is also connected with the crank Gr. The crank ot' the fan-rod must have such a position in relation to the position of the pin for connecting the rod H with the crib that the crib and the fan will swing in opposite directions.
If the fan is to remain stationary and the crib only is to be rocked, the connecting=rod M is detached; audit the fan only is to swing and the crib is to remain stationary, the con necting-rod M is replaced and the rod H is detached.
The latch P is used to prevent the springE from uncoiling when both the fan and the crib are to remain stationary.
Having thus fully described my invention,1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 3. In a rocking crib, the combination, with the fan-rod K, provided with notches K, of 20 the fan-frame N and the spring-latch 0, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose of adjustment of the frame N on the rod K, as set forth.
4. The combination,with the clock-spring E, 25 the shaft F, and the crank G, of the latch P, pivoted to the standard D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
