`communicating with the chamber 2,
Patented Dec. 9, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEV ASH RGEIVER J'SKS Ben-ton L Fay, St. Joseph; Mich: Application oveiiiei- 7, 19416, seai ivo. 'W822i (Ch` ZSZl) This invention relates t' i-npiivIii-its inI ash receivers for desks.
The Inain objects of this invention arz First, to provide an ash rfc'eive for desks which is supported so that does not obstruct the top of the desk, cannot be upset by the movement of papers and objects on lthe desk, and at the same time is eadily accessible'.
Second,l to provide a structure having these advantages which is neat and attractive in appea= ance.
Further objects relating" to details and economies of the invention will appear in the description to follow. The invention is dened in the claims.
A structure which embodiesthe features of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary view in vertical section on a line corresponding to line I-I of Figs. 2 and 3, the ash receptacle being shown in partially withdrawn position by dotted lines.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view,
Fig 3 is a plan view showing the general relation of the parts to a desk which is conventionally illustrated, parts being shown by dotted lines.
The embodiment of my invention illustrated comprises the desk top I having a chamber 2 below the top, the wall 3 constituting one wall of the chamber, this wall 3 being a side wall of the knee hole, The top I has an opening I therein The opening 4 is surrounded by the recess 5 having an upwardly facing peripheral groove 6. The concave receiver I is seated in the recess 5 and has a downturned .ange 8 engaging the groove 5. The top of the receiver is flush with the desk top.
The receiver has a delivery spout or tube 9 projecting into the chamber 2. The wall 3 has an opening I therein adapted to removably receive the cylindrical receptacle II which has a top opening I2 aligned with the spout 9 to receive the material discharged through the spout. The receptacle II has a closed inner end I3 and a partition IB adjacent its outer end. The receptacle is provided with an end member I provided with a flange I6 engaging the outer side of the wall 3. This end member and the partition I4 coact to provide a chamber I'I in which the bolt housing I8 is arranged, the bolt housing being mounted on the inner side of the end member I5. The bolt I9 is slidably arranged in the,r
housing I 8 and is biased by the spring 20 arranged at the inner end of the bolt so that the beit is crmeiiy projected into engagement with the keeper 2 I mounted iii the vyaIi 3 at the bottom f the opening thereof. The end member l5 is provided with stef-iike'nnger' piece 221 which is recessed on itsnderjside at 4zfa-` to feceive the bolt actuating'levef 2# which is pivted at 2s et the' cuter end ofthe recess and nii/stellv epnnecte-a at is to the toit.L frime; arranged, when the grip of n gef piece zzis grasped teremove the receptacle, the lv' 24 isactutdto r'etract the bolt permitting the" withdrawal f the rceptacle;
The receiver 1 is Aprovided with e depressed portion or downwardly oiset' portion 26 at one side ofthe spout having a hol flltherein adapted to receive the` quenchingwell V23n which has a iiange 29 at its upper end.` This quenching well is externally threaded at 30 to be threaded into the nut 3| which is secured to the under side of the receiver. The quenching well iiange 29 has nger notches 32 which makes it convenient to grasp Afor removal for cleaning. This quenching well is designed to contain water so that cigarettes or cigars may be extinguished before they are dropped into the receiver.
With 'this arrangement oi parts the top of the desk is not obstructed. The receiver may be conveniently located and cannot be upset by objects placed on the desk.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment thereof which I iind highly satisfactory. I have not attempted to i1- lustrate or describe various embodiments or adaptations which I contemplate, as it is believed that this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt the invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination in a desk including a top and a chamber below the top having a side wall, the side wall having an opening therein communicating with said chamber, the top having an aperture therethrough surrounded by a recess and an upwardly facing groove, of a concaved receiver disposed in said recess and having a downwardly projecting peripheral flange disposed in said groove, the receiver having a central dis-l icharge spout depending into said chamber, an
with the desk top, the receiver having a central Y discharge spout depending into said chamber, an ash receptacle removably supported in said wall opening and having an opening in the top thereof through which said spout discharges, said receptacle having a flanged end member provided with a grip, said receptacle being provided with a partition spaced from said end member Yto pro vide a bolt chamber, a spring biased'bolt arrangedin said `bolt chamber to project therefrom, a keeper mounted on said wall tocoact with said bolt, said end member having a. bolt lever receiving recess. therein, and a bolt .actuating lever disposed` in said recess and pivotally connected to said bolt and end member. Y Y
3. The combination in a Adesk including a top and a chamber below the top having a side wall, the top having a recess therein surrounded by an upwardly facing groove at its outer edge, of a receiver disposed in said recess and having a downwardly projecting peripheral ilange. disposed in said vgroove with the top of rthe 4receiver substantially flush with thedesk top, said receiver having a discharge` spout depending into said chamber, an ash receptacle removably mounted on said wall to project into said chamber to receive the discharge from said spout, said receptaclerhaving a anged end member. a spring biased bolt carried by said receptacle, a keeper mounted on said side Wall to coact with said bolt, a grip on said receptacle projecting from said flanged end member when the receptacle is mounted thereon, and a bolt retracting lever pivotally mounted on said grip so that the bolt may b e disengagedV by the operator grasping the grip.
4. The combination in a desk including a top and a chamber below the'top having 'aside Wall,
l,the top having a recess therein surrounded by an upwardly facing groove at its outer edge, of al receiver disposed in said recess and having a downwardly projecting peripheral flange disposed i'n said groove with the top of the receiver substantially ush with the desk top, said receiver having a discharge spout depending into said chamber, an ash receptacle removably mounted on said wall to project into said chamber to receive the discharge from said spout, and a flanged end member on said receptacle and provided with a hand grip, the ange on said end member being arranged to engage said side wall to locate said receiver under said spout.
