Description

(No Model.)
0. SGHOTTE 8L A. B. REPLOG-LE.
Window Cornice.
Patented J'une 21,1881.v
I HtL-Qsv/ PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SUHOTTE AND AARON B.
WINDOW- BEPLOGLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CORNICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,085, dated June 21, 1881.
,Application filed May 10, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES SoHoTTE and AARON B. REPLOGLE, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Extensible Window (Jornices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the cornice; Fig. 2, a plan view Fig. 3, a longitudinal section through the center of Fig. 1, looking from the top; Fig. 4, a perspective of the center piece, showing the blocks fitted thereto; and Fig. 5, a cross-section on the line 0000 of Fig. 2.
Our invention relates to extensible windowcornices; and it consists in the construction and the combination of parts hereinafter particularly described, and then sought to be specifically defined by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the extensible sections of the cornice; B, the center piece; 0, the back strip or bar in which the extensible sections slide, and D the device which clamps and holds the parts together.
The faces of the extensible sections and center piece may be of any approved pattern. The rear of the center piece is made so as to conform to the face of the extensible sections, so that the two parts will fit more neatly together, and they may be more tightly clamped together; but, instead of plowing the back of the center piece to make it correspond to the face of the extensible sections, we secure to its (No model.)
blocks F to the required shape than to plow the back of the center piece. Any number of center pieces of any approved design may be kept on hand and expeditiously applied to any shaped molding by simply cutting the blocks F and attaching them, as described,to the center piece.
A dovetailed strip, 0, is held to the back of the extensible pieces A by means of screws or flaring-headed pins G, the heads of which fit into the dovetailed groove in the strip. The strip is prevented from becoming accidentally detached from the extensible pieces A by means of pins H, run transversely through the grooves near the ends of the strip. By using the flaring-headed pins a cheap and effective guide is obtained for the sections A and the weight of the cornice somewhatlightened, and the sections and strip are held together thereby. The pins are alsosufticient to regulate the tension of the cornice and to hold the parts together even when the center piece iS.(1GttCh6(l.
The center piece,B, is held to its place by a simple screw or threaded bolt, D, which is passed through the strip G, between the ends of the sections A, and into the center piece. By screwing in the bolt the center piece is drawn toward the sections A and clamped thereto, so as not to be moved. By unscrewing the bolt the sections may be extended without being scratched or defaced by the center piece.
I We are aware that the parts of an extensible cornice have been locked together by a bolt and thumb-nut and by various other devices; but by constructing the center piece with the blocks F and lightening the whole structure by constructing it as we have described, we are enabled to hold the parts together by a simple bolt or screw, whereby the device is made simpler and much cheaper of manufacture without taking from the eifective working of the parts.
Having described our invention, what We claim is- 1. The extensible sections A,provided with flaring-headed pins G, in combination with dovetailed grooved strip 0 and center piece, B,
provided with blocks F, the parts being held 111 testimony whereof we affix our signatures 10 together by the screw D, substantially as set in presence of two witnesses.
forth. 1
2. The combination of grooved strip 0, ex-
5 tensible sections A, provided with projections 1 fitting into the groove of strip 0, center piece, I \Vitnesses:
B, provided with blocks F, and a device for A. E. KING, clamping the parts together, substantially as H. O. DIENER. described.
