Application April 30, 1
7 Claims.
The present invention refers to breast pads of the type worn under a garment for the purpose of improving the appearance of an underdeveloped female bust.
An object of the present invention is to provide a pad of the character described which shall be of very simple and economical construction.
A further object is that such a pad shall be comfortable to wear, and to that end shall preferably be free of seams on its surface in contact with the body.
Still another object of this invention is that the pad shall present clean inner and outer surfaces at all times.
Yet another object is that the pad in use shall possess to a great degree the visual and tactile characteristics of a normal female bust.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obviou and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In accomplishing the objects of the present invention, a substantially conical pad or form of textile or felted material is provided, consisting of one or more circular discs of the said material, from which a sector has been out and the cut edges drawn together by stitching. This conical pad or form is completely enclosed in a pocket of novel construction. The cover member of the pocket, that is, the one which will be worn outwardly, is formed of light textile material. The inner member of the pocket is composed of two circles of light textile material, each first folded in half and then sewn or otherwise joined to the outer member around its circumferential portion, the diametral border of each folded circular piece of textile material being left free. In the preferred form, one sector portion of each half folded piece overlaps a corresponding portion. All forms of the invention share the advantage that the cover pocket of the pad conforms to the pad nicely, yet has no seams on its inner surface, and said inner surface is formed with an opening through which the pad may be removed for washing of the pocket and pad separately and the easier drying thereof when separate.
In the accompanying drawings, in which are shown three of the various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective exterior view of the pad embodying the invention;
946, Serial No. 666,049
Figure 2 is an elevation of P Figure 3 is a section along the line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of an inner member folded in half;
Figure 5 is a plan view of a disc of material relieved preparatory to forming into a cone, illustrating a step in making a modified breast pad;
Figure 6 is a perspective view illustrating a further step in making a modification of the inner pocket member; and
Figure 7 is an elevational view of another. modification of the invention.
Referring now to the drawing, the breast pad ill comprises a pad I l which is substantially conical, being illustrated as comprising two layers I2, l3 of relatively heavy soft textile or padding material. Form or pad H is conveniently made by removing a substantially sector shaped portion from one or more substantially circular sheets of material and drawing together the cut edges by means of stitching.
Form or pad H is enclosed in a pocket I9 comprising an outer member 20 and an inner member 2!, all preferably consisting of relatively soft and light textile material. The outer and inner members 20, 2| conform in shape to the outer and inner surfaces respectively of form H.
Member 20 may conveniently be made from a single sheet of textile material similar in shape but somewhat larger than the sheet of which the pads are made, and having its edges drawn together by a line of fine stitches, as at 2011. The member 20, 2| are joined together circumferentially as by interior stitches 22 engaging inturned edge portions 23 of the members 29, 2|, so that the inner surface of member 2| is free of stitches which might contact and irritate the body of the wearer. For the purpose of the present specification, the word interior shall be taken to mean located between the inner and outer members 20, 2| of pocket I9, while inner shall be taken to mean the member 2! or the surface thereof which is toward the body of the wearer.
Inner member 2! ofpocket l9 comprises two similar semi-circular members 25, each formed of a circular piece 26 folded in half and comprising semi-circular portions 21, 28 continuous one with the other along their diametral folded border portions 29. The members 25 are so arranged that an end sector portion of each overlaps an end sector portion of the other so that each member keeps the other in place and together they form the conical inner member 2|. The members the inner side of the 25 are in parallel relation with the form ll circumferentially and along the interior surface thereof and the diametral portions 29 are constituted with radial portions 3|, 32 and 33, 34, respectively. The radial portions 3|, 32, 33, 34 are all free of stitches and freely extending, and thus define a substantially diametral opening 35 between the interior of pocket l9 and the space outside thereof, which space in the operative condition of the pad l0, would be that on the insideof the pad and adapted to contain the bust of the wearer. Since all the materials of pad H] are readily deformable, form H may readily be removed from pocket l9 through diametral opening 35.
In the preferred form of the invention, diametral opening 35 is defined by fur sector shaped portions of the members 25, namely the two overlapped portions, located between the lines 33, 32
and the two corresponding portions located between the lines 34, 3|. The members 25 are thus in mutually overlapping and interlocking relation.
In a modified form of the invention, illustrated in Figure 7, two members 25 of an inner member of a pocket otherwise similar topocket I 9 are shown in overlapping relation in which theoverlapping construction differs from that already shown. In this form, the end sector shaped portions 41, 48 of onemember overlap the corresponding end sector portions 49', 50 of the other member 25, to define a substantially diametral opening in the pocket, through which a form H may be removed.
Another form of the invention is illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, in which an innermember 6| replaces members 25. Member 6! may conveniently be formed by radially slitting a substantially circular sheet of material along line 6| a and overlapping the edge portions thus formed, constituting two overlapping sector shaped portions 52, 63-constituting the walls of an opening into the interior of the pocket, so that a pad or form I I may be removed from the pocket by passing between the walls 62, B3.
The removal of theform' from the pocket permits washing the constituent parts of the pad l0 conveniently and drying thereof more rapidly.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is. well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to' be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
