' I BUST PAD Filed Feb., 21, 1946 Patented Apr. 25, 1195() UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BUST PAD Martha Brauer, Jersey City, N. J.
Application February 21, 1946, Serial No. 649,328
5 Claims.
This invention relates to undergarments and in'particular to a bust pad.
According to this invention there is provided a bust pad which is readily removable for purposes of laundering, and which has a satisfactory resiliency of texture and appearance thus avoiding articiality.
l It is an object of Athis invention to provide a removable bust pad that is self-forming and lits itself to the contour of the bust.
Y Additional objects of the invention as well as its construction and use will in part be shown in the 'following description and will in part be obvious.
' For `further 'comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig.' 1 is a front elevation of the bust pad according to one embodiment of this invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view in cross section oi the article shown in Fig. 1, taken along the line v2---2.
Fig. 3 is a front perspective View, partially broken away, of padding material according to one embodiment of this invention before it has been stitched into final form.
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the casing for the bust pad shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a, perspective view partially broken away, of a bust pad according to another embodiment of this invention.
Fig. 6 is a rear elevation of the casing for the bust pad according to a further modieation of the invention.
Fig. 7 is a side view of the pad shown in Fig. 6.
Referring to Figs. 1-4 there is shown a bust pad generally designated IIJ according to one embodiment of the invention. The pad comprises generally an outer casing I I and aninner padding material I2 removably positioned therewithin. Thefpad I is cone or cup-shaped, to resemble in general appearance the human breast.
The front piece I3 of the casing II' is a cupshaped piece of cloth or fabric having a pleat or fold I running from its center horizontally to at least one edge. This pleat permits the forming of a dat piece of cloth into a cup-shaped article, and further provides a resilience of structure. Substantially at or near the center of this front v piece I3 is the male member of a snap fastener,
small piece of lace I'I which serves doubly as a decoration and as a reinforcing member. Around the outer edge of the casing II is optionally a decorative material such as a ribbon or lace IB.
rihe rear portion of the casing II comprises a pair of generally semi-circular cloth members I4 xed, for example, by sewing around the circumference of the pad and open across the center. This opening 2l, like the pleat I5 in the front portion I3 runs generally horizontally across the pad, adding to the resilience of the structure. These rear members I4 are adapted to be pulled away from the iront portion to permit placing a padding member I2 in the space therebetween. If desired, there may also be provided a fastener (not shown) to secure the padding in its correct position within the casing. For further strengthening of the rear members, they are preferably double thickness, such as, a circular piece of cloth folded across the center to form the semi-circular member I4.
If desired, inner padding I2 may be satisfactorily constructed of a molded rubber or similar material.
The padding member I2 (see Fig. 3) comprises a generally circular fabric I9, optionally a heavy felt or a plurality of layers of felt-like material. The thickness of this member determines the amount of body added by the bust pad, and accordingly the thickness and construction of this member will be selected with due regard to the individual requirements. The circular piece of material is provided with at least one V-shaped cut 20 extending toward its center, and may alternatively comprise a plurality of segments of a circle secured together. In forming the padding member I2 from this piece I9 the edges of the V-shaped cuts are sewed together, for example, with an elastic thread, whereby a cup-shaped pad is formed which is adapted to fit within casing II. A resilient or elastic thread is desirable inasmuch as it adds to the resiliency of the entire structure; however, the same result may readily be accomplished by a diagonal stitching (not shown in the figures). A simple cross stitching 22 of an elastic thread will sufiice.
In Fig. 5 there is shown a somewhat different form of the bust pad lila comprising a casing I Ia having a front portion I3a and a horizontally split rear portion Ida containing a padding member 12B. In this embodiment there is a pleat I5a which bridges two V-shaped cuts 2li*3L in the padding member |28, the edges of which are loosely stitched together, A decorative fringe I8a enhances the appearance of the pad. The snap fastener I6 may be omitted, as is shown for example in this figure, the pad being firmly retained in position by means of the shape of the pad l0 or llla and the brassire (not shown) into which it fits. Other elements correspond to those of the previous embodiment and have similar designations with added postscripts er I n use, thevpadding member HlV of the bust pad is pla ed 'ns'id the asingltthrough' open: ing 2l in'the'rear'of the easing.:A This pad is then inserted in the brassire and is secured in placa: for example, by the snap fastener B coacting with a female fastener in the brassire. The gar;
ment is then worn as desired. After ahnormal, period of Wear, the pad is removediandlwashed,
the inner padding memberr ll2`1optionally,
member is slower drying, it may be desirable to useanother duplicate.paddingmember for the nextA subsequent occasion of wear to permit thorough. drying. Alternatively, this padding membe'r'may be removed andnot washed on each occasion when the remainder of the pad is washed,` thus assisting topreserve its texture and its resiliency.
Insthe modificationshowninFigs. 6 and 7 the pad isself-shaping by reason of the use of semicircularV portions llissecured attheir peripheral edgesiasat 25.t`o the .peripheral edge of anV outer circular..piece .ZELWhichiSgathered as by a pleat 21.-, to shapethepiece conically.- The portions I 4b; have., an .arcuate extent .exceeding 180 and when they are sewn to the peripheral edges of the outerportion`2'6 .they .will provide overlaps ZS'at their...radial-meeting edges whichcause the inner wall. of. .the structure ltosubstantially parallel the out'enwall. thereof Y'when apad .is positioned betweenthe walls. The pad risthus self-shaping and selfeclosing' and willretainits shape under all conditions. Other elements correspond to those of the previousembodiments and have similar designationswith added postscripts .b.
The advantages of the present construction are obtained in Atheb'ust pad V with aminimum of cost and-without .resortingioj additional Work, .and without the'need. of; costly.` steps-in fabrication, being .simpleA to manufacture andv easy to proclucelw i `Wliile- I have illustrated and described the preferred. embodiments. of-.my.invention, it is to be understood that Ifdonotlimit myself .to the. precise constructions herein-disclosed and the right -isrrese'rvedto yall changes and vmodications coming. withinthe sco'peof. theinvention as defined" in .jthe appended claims.
