Description

July 30 1946 a GLICKMAN .2,405,030
S HGULDER PAD Filed March 24, 1944 INVENTGR. Bznjamm Clickman AITRAEK Patented July 30, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHOULDER PAD Benjamin Glickman, New York, N. Y.
Application March 24, 1944, Serial No. 527,866
1 claim. l
This invention relates to new and useful im provements in shoulder pads.
Heretofore, it has been general practice to provide a shoulder pad With cloth casing material into which a pad is mounted. It has been proposed to hold the pad relative to the casing by stitches extended across the pad and also engaging through the casing. This construction materially reduced the padding effect of the shoulder pad. It divides the shoulder pad into sections, Where the stitches occur, which are relatively flexibly connected With reduced areas, which do not produce a good pad effect. This invention proposes an improved shoulder pad which is characterized by so arranging the stitches thatJ they do not pass through the pad material in the cloth casing.
'I'he invention also contemplates constructing the shoulder pad of various designs and shapes.
It is further proposed, in a modied form of the invention to provide a stiffening strip for assisting in holding the shoulder pad in condition.
Still further, the invention proposes the construction of a shoulder pad as mentioned which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a shoulder pad constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on the line 2.-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a shoulder pad constructed in accordance with another form of this invention.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line ll-4 of Fig. 3.
In the form of the invention disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2, the new and improved shoulder pad includes a triangularly shaped casing I6 provided with a triangularly shaped pad II. The casing I is, constructed of cloth material, preferably rayon, cotton or silk or other material generallj,7 used for the casings of shoulder pads. The casing IG has a bottom layer f2 and a top layer I3 which are stitched together along two sides by lines of stitches I4. The bottom layer I2 has its third side extended upwards and over the top of the top 2 layer I3. These over-lapping layers are secured together With a line of stitches I5.
In the particular design of the shoulder pad shown on the drawing, the third side is curved convexly. For this reason the over-lapping top portion of the` bottom layer is formed with several pleats, darts or shirring I3. The important :feature of the invention resides in the fact that no stitches are engaged through the interior pad I I. For this reason, the pad will not be weakened along any line or area. The shoulder pad itself has greater rigidity and is better capable of supporting the shoulder of a dress or garment.
This shoulder pad is adapted to be stitched in the seam joining the sleeve and armhole, at the shoulder, without stitching through the casing and padding of this shoulder pad.
In Figs. 3 and 4 another embodiment of the invention has been disclosed which is very similar to the prior form, distinguished simply in the fact that the shoulder pad has been provided with a stiffening strip i'I to add to its rigidity. The stifiening strip il may be whale bone, or it may be a steel strip. It is used Within a passage I8 formed transversely across the casing lil, along the chord of the casing, The passage I3 is formed by the edge portion of the over-lapping top portion of the bottom layer I2 of the casing and the adjacent portion of the top layer i3. A line of stitches I S closes one side of the passage I8. The other side of the passage is closed by the line of stitches I5.
In other respects this form of the invention is identical to the prior form and identica1 parts may be recognized by identical reference numerals given them.
The advantage of using the stiffening strip I1 resides in the fact that the pad is materially stiffened across its Width without materially adding to its Weight.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments ci my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to Secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A shoulder pad having a top triangular Wall with its edge along the base of the triangle folded over on top to form a hem; a bottom Wall having a triangular portion in line with said triangular Wall and secured thereto along the sides thereof,
ing a pocket extending along said base, a stiiening strip in said pocket, and a Wad of packing disposed unattached between said Walls, said pad having a convex face remote from the apex of said 5 Dad.
BENJAMIN GLICKMAN.
