I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED E. COOKE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA., ASSIGNOR TO THE QUAKER CITY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, (LIMITED,) OF SAME PLACE.
.BLUlNG-PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,755, dated June 14, 1881.
Application filed May 9, 1881. ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED E. mm, of the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packages for Soluble Material, such as washing-blue, dyestuff, salt of acids, 850., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanyingdrawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the article;-
Fig. 2 a longitudinal section of the same.
The object of my invention is to furnish a package in which soluble material can be supplied and made use of in a convenient and economical manner, the package varying in size to suit the material to be supplied and the demands of consumption.
In describing the construction of my invention I take leave at the same time to refer to the accompanying drawings, with letters and figures therein.
In the drawings, A is the handle. d b are two hollow hemispheres, which, when placed together, as hereinafter described, form a reservoir, through which the handleA is passed and secured. The shape of the reservoir, or the handle, or both, or the manner of attaching them, is not necessarily as shown; they can be of other design, and attached in other manner, and also of other material.
To construct my invention I take sheet-tin and make two disks, and punch in the center of each a hole to receive the handle A, and in one of them, b, I make a number of other holes surroui'idingthe hole made to receive the handle. I then form the disks thus prepared into hemispheres, of a size to be placed together like a box and lid, thus forming the reservoir C. I then take for the handle A suitable wire, and form at one end the loop e. I then reduce the diameter of the other end to correspond with the size of the holes made in the reservoir C to receive it, thereby forming a shoulder a sufficient distance from the end to allow it to pass through the reservoirC far enough to allow it to be riveted or otherwise secured, so as to fasten the hemispheres d b and the handle A thus prepared together. I then close with sealingwvax, or some other suitablesubstance, topreventleakage, theholes in hemisphere b, with the exception of the one intended to receive the handle A. I then fill into the hemispheres cl b the material to be used, and with it a pebble or some hard substance, to act as a breaker on the material to be used, 5 5 if it should become clogged. I then. close thc hemispheres d b like a box and lid, thus forming the reservoir C. I then insert the handle A through the holes made to receive it, and
rivet it, or otherwise secure the handle A and the hemispheres together. The package is thus completed.
To make use of the package I first provide a suitable vessel with the required liquid there in. I then pierce the wax covering the holes 6 in hemisphere b, to allow the material inclosed to escape. I then take hold of the handle A and stir the liquid with the end containing the reservoir C. If the material is more than is required for immediate use, the package can then be hung up bythe loop a for future service without any waste.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hluing-package herein described, consisting of a reservoir formed of the hemispheres d and b, the latter being perforated, and both being connected together by a rod, A, which islengthened on one side of the reservoir 80 to form a handle, all arranged as set forth.
ALFRED E. COOKE.
