HENRY SATTLER, OF SWISS, MISSOURL H ILLSIDE-PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,697, dated June 7, 18,81.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SATTLER, of Swiss, in the county of Gasconade and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hillside-Flows; and Ido hereby declare the following to be `a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawin gs,which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in side-hill plows; and it consists in the arrange- -ment and combination of parts, which will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby a cheap, simple, and effective plow is produced.

A represents the beam of the plow, which may be made of the curved form shown, and which is wider along its lower edge than at any other point. The rear end of this beam is curved backward to the center of the double mold-board C, and through the end of this beam and the double mold-board is passed the pivotal rod D. In between the two landsides of the double mold-board is secured a brace, E, of the shape shown, and which is provided with perforated ears or projections, through which fastening-bolts are passed for thepurpose of securing it in position. This brace closes up to a considerable extent the space between the two landsides of the double moldboard, and owing t0 its shape the brace will easily move along past the earth without clogging up. The rear end of the pivotal rod is jonrnaled in the lower end of the hanger Il, which is secured to the lower part of the brace or support Gr. This brace or support for the handles has secured to its front side a brace, H, which is of the shape shown, and which is provided with a projection, I, below its center. Below thisprojection the braceis inclined backward, and has its lower end fastened to the hanger, so as to give it additional strength and support. The brace G has secured to each side of its lower end a flat plate, J, which extends forward, and has its front end secured to the rear end of the beam A. The projection I ts in between these two parts, and through the two plates and projection is passed a suitable clamping-bolt, as shown, for the purpose of bracing the parts rigidly together. In between these two plates is pivoted the double catch L, which consists of the two prongs M, for catching over the .top of each one of the landsides as the mold-boards are turned up into position, and thus keep the mold-boards in place. On the under side of the center nf this catch is formed the flange N, which projects down between the two plates and receives the pivotingbolt, upon which it turns. On the rear end of the catch are formed the two shoulders O, which catch against the tops of the two plates, and thus prevent the catch from being moved too far back by means of its operating-rod P, which is loosely attached to a projection, Q, upon its top. This catch, being made heaviest upon its front end, drops forward ot' its own weight whenever this operatiu g-rod is released, so as to be perfectly automatic in its action, without the help of any other device.
The front ends of the two handles are inclosed upon three sides by means of the sockets R, and are then bolted to the beam A. `These sockets are secured to the handles in any suitable manner at their upper ends,and serve to prevent the handles from being broken, split,
oriujured, as they are always liable to be'when' left unprotected.
Passed over the front end of the beam Ais the supportngslide T, to which the revolving toothed cutter V is swiveled. This slide is provided with a set-screw, by means of which it is secured to the beam A, and by loosening this screw the cutter can be moved backward, so as to run back over the top of the share,or can be moved forward to the front end of the beam, so as not to run overv the share at all. This support is made hollow in its lower end, and into which the upper end, U, ot' the swiveled bearing of the cutter extends. In order to secure the upper end of this bearin gin the sliding support, two holes are made through the opposite sides of this sliding support, and then clamped around the support. Just opposite these holes are the two pronged catches W. Each one of these catches W is made semicircular in shape, and has the projection X at its center to pass through one ofthe holes in the sidev ICO made in the upper end of the bearing of the journal. The two'ends of these two catches are clamped together by means of nuts and bolts, so as to hold them more securely in position. rIhere may be only one or a series of 'grooves made in the upper end of the support for the wheel, whereby the wheel can be made to run high above the plow-point or close down to it.
The rolling cutter is provided with sharp pointed teeth, and the edge of the cutter is sharpened in between the teeth, so as to make the cutter cut more easily, and to prevent it from becoming dull as soon as it would if only the sharp edge were formed. The center of this cutter has a suitable bearing riveted or otherwise secured to each of its sides, so that when the bearing has become worn out another one can be readily supplied.
I am aware that a rolling colter has been swiveled in a box and the box made adjustable upon the beam, and this I disclaim.
Having thus described my invention, I Claiml l. The combination of the support G, and the z 5 brace H, secured to its front side and provided with the projection I,with the plates J, extending forward and having their front ends fastened to the beam A, substantially as shown.

The combination of the supporting-slide 3o T, having its lower end made hollow and provided with holes upon opposite sides,with the curved end of the support for the cutter, and the two clamps YV, provided with projections for passing through the holes in the sides of '3 5 the sliding support, substantially as specified.
