TUBULAR Bow-SOCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,562, dated June 7, 1881.
Application filed February 17, 1881.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND SELLE, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Tubular Dow-Sockets, ot' which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention relates to eertain new and usel'ul improvements in carriagebow sockets, by means of which a greater strength is obtained than is had when constructed in the ordinary manner.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction ofthe parts, their combinations, and operation, as more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is an elevation,partially in section, of niyimprovcinent. Fig.2 is a cross-section. Fig. 3 is a moditication of the slat-iron.
In the accompanying drawings, A represen ts a tapering tube, the lower portion of which is iilled with wood, leaving a socket, B, at its upper end to receive the end ot' the wooden carriage-bow.
C is what is termed in the trade a slatiron,provided with a pointed or gimlet screw, F, which is screwed into the lower end ofthe wood iilling at the lower end of the tube. To strengthen the parts a nut, D, provided with l'la n ge a, is screwed upon the Slat-iron until the ilange embraces the lower end of' the tube, 'to which it is soldered, brazed, or otherwise similarly secured.
The back bow of acarriage-top is frequently injured, when the top is thrown back, by impact with the stop which projects from the side of the carriage to sustain the weight of the top when in that position. To prevent (No model.)

The parts A C D F and the wooden lilling composing` the socket are designed to be made and sold separate from the bow, and the socket so formed makes a complete device, ready to be applied to the end ot' a bow at any time.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The tubular socket B, having a wooden lilling, in combination with Slat-iron C, provided with a shank, F, to be forced into said socket, and provided with a threaded portion for receiving a ring-nut, D, which is soldered to the socket after the shank is driven into place, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the socket B andthe slat-iron C, having` a screw-threaded shank, and a portion below the shank having a screwthread of a different pitch, the ring-nut B, provided with a flange, a, to be soldered to the socketA after the shank has been screwed therein, substantially as and for the purpose described.
