KEY FOR ELECTRIC CUT-CUTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,364, dated January 2*?, 1891. Application iletl May 5, 1890. Serial No. 350,695. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIGMUND BERGMANN, of New York, county and State of Neur York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Attaching Devices fr Keys for Electrical CutOuts, of Which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to cut-outs adapted to b'e removably secured in the arm or bracket of a ixture; and it consists in means, substantially as hereinafter described, for removably attaching a key or finger-piece to the cut-out shaft. In cut-outs of this character it is desirable that the design of the linger-piece should have a relation to the design of the fixture, and the fingerpieces are therefore manufactured as a part of the fixture independent of the cut-out.
The object of my invention is to provide a cut-out to the shaft of which any key or fmger-piece may be attached.
I Will describe a cut-out embodying my im provement, and then point out the novel features in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central longitudinal section of a device emn bodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fi g. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 4 is a section through the line :c et of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 shows a socket attachment for a key.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a cut=out removably secured in a ponh tion of a xture B. A detailed description of the cut-out here shown is not deemed necessary, as it is fully described in a pending ap plication, Serial N o. 340,700, and I do not limit my present invention to any one form of output. The cut-out may be described generally, however, as having a frame consisting of the metal portion a and the portion ct, of insulating material, forming bearings for the rotary shaft C, upon which is mounted a cutout Wheel a2 to form connections with contact-plates d3. The rotary shaft O has a reduced portion c at its outer end, and in the main portion it has opposite longitudinal grooves or channels c', extending a portion of the length of the shaft and joined at the near end by a transverse perforation or hole c2 through the shaft. `The channels c provide seats for spring-arms l) D. The spring-arms are here shown as formed from one piece of metal, preferably springsteel, having the transverse port-ion d passing through the hole c2 in the shaft. free end a lock portion or lug d', extending outward at substantially right angles to the main portion of the arm, and the front surface of each lug d is slightly inclined, as shown.
E designates an attaching-piece constructed to engage With the shaft C and the springarms and to have a key or finger-piece E secured to it. The attaching-piece is here shown as tubular and having a portion of its interior enlarged at e to pass over a section of the main portion of the shaft C, the reduced portion c of the shaft passing into the smaller interior e. Opposite perforations e2 are provided through t-he attaching-piece, and the inner end surface is beveled, as at e3.. v
To place the attaching-piece in position, it is .pushed onto the shaft C. The bevel e3, striking against the incline of the lugs d', forces the spring-arms toward each other until the lugs are in line with the perforations e2, into fWhich they spring', locking the parts together.
The engaging-piece may be removed from the shaft C by compressing the spring-arms by means of a suitable tool.
The attaching piece E has a reduced threaded portion e4, to which a key E may be secured by providing said key With an interiorlythreaded socket, as shown. If desired, the reduced portion may also be soldered in the socket, and it is obvious that the key may be attached in other Ways than that shown without departing from the spirit of my invention. l
Having described my invention, what I claim is l. In a cut-out, the combination, with the rotary shaft having the channels and reduced portion at its end, and spring-arms, of the tubular attaching-piece having the enlarged `inner portion to engage over a section of the main portion of the shaft and the smaller inlach spring-arm D has at its ner portion to engage over the outer portion in the shaft, and the key or finger-piece oonof the shaft, and perforations to engage lugs structed to removably engage with'said shaft Io on the spring-arms, substantially as specified. and spring-arms, substantially as specified.
