PRESS-MAT'.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,553, dated June '7, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEAN J. MIsTRoT, of Bryan, in the county of Brazos and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Press-Mat, of which the following is a'specication.

My invention relates to au improved construction of press-mats used in connection with cotton-seedoil presses 5 and the object of the improvement is to give the mats greater strength and durability, and thus, by enabling them to withstand a greater pressure, obtain a larger yield ot' oil. v

The invrutiou consists in making the mat ot' three lea\ es, t'or the purpose of enabling two eight-pound cakes to be pressed in each mat; also, in making the outside leaves of a combination of leather, sheet metal, and press-cloth, to give them the proper endurance; lastly, in connecting these leaves together by a jointed handle that gives them perfect iiexibility in their connection and. allows them to adjust readily to the several positions they are required to assume.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved press mat on line m of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 shows the mat with one of the outside leaves removed so as to expose the middle leaf.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

Referring to the drawings, A A are the outside leaves of the press-mat, and B is the inside or middle leaf. The first are composed of a face-plate, a, of sheet metal, and an outside or casing-plate, b, of thick leather. The second is composed of a single plate ot' sheet metal. On the face of the outside leaves, and on bot-h sides or faces ot' the inside or middle leaf, is formed a rectangular raised rim, C, parallel to the edges, leaving a depression, l), within the rim. The rims are composed ot' a layer or strip of leather, c, next to the plate, and over this a layer of press-cloth, d, and the two parts of the rim, the metal, and the leather plates of the outsideleaves are all connected together by metal lacing-strips e passed through and through, with the ends bent down against the press-cloth.

To the rear end of the leaves are attached jaws f, with holes g through them to receive a pintle. In the slots between the jaws are placed the ends of links E, where they are held by the pintles passed through them and the jaws. The middle leaf has a double link, as shown. The outer ends ot' all the links are connected together by a pintle, h, over which is placed a wooden handle, F, by means whereofthe mat is placed in and taken out of the press.

The metal plates are stifteued by doubling the .edges otl the sides and free ends, as indicated at t'.

A press-mat thus constructed is stronger, more durable, and cheaper than those now in use, and, owing to their being able to withstand a greater pressure, alarger yield of oil can be obtained by their use than any now known. Another advauta ge obtained from them is that the leather plates on the outside of the leaves enable the workmen to handle them without liability ot' being burned.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improvement in press-mats, the leaves A A, composed ot' a metal face-plate, a, outside leather plate, b, and a rectangular rim on the faceplate, parallel to the edges thereof, composed ot' strips of leather, o, overlaid with press-cloth d, all secured together by metal lacing-strips e, in the manner substantially as described.

2. The middle leaf', B, made ot' sheet. metal, with rims C on both faces, in combination with the outside leaves, A A, constructed and arranged in the manner substantially as described.

3. The links E, pivoted at one end to the leaves A A B, and connected together at the opposite end by a pintle, h, in combination with the press-mat, substantially as described.
