mum-I UNITE STATES PATENT Carton;
WILFORD W. YOKOM, OF PARKERSBURG, IOWA.
STOVE-DRUM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,406, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed October 21, 1880. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. W. YOKOM, of Parkersburg, in the county of Butler and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Stove-Drums; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ofthis specification, and to the letters and figures of refereuce marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view, partially broken away. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.-
This invention relates to stove drums; and it consists in the construction hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawings, A represents a stove-drum, made of any desired shape and of any suitable material. It consists of a body portion, 13, and top 0 and bottom D, the said parts being firmly fastened together.
Attached to the bottom D is a section of stove-pipe, E, opening into the drum. Projectiug through the top and extending some distance within the drum is another section of stove-pipe, F.
Seated within the drum and resting against the bottom is an H shaped frame, H, the edges of whose arms h h rest tightly against the sides of the drum and have openings h h at their bottoms, there being a space between the tops of arms h h and the top of the drum.
On the inside of the arms h h, just above slots h h, are fastened two strips, h h forming between a groove, in which grooves is slid a diaphragm, h, forming the cross portion of the H-shaped frame H. In said diaphragm, on a line with sections E and F, is located a damper, I, operated by a rod, 2', turning in bearings 41 i. In the top 0 are holes a 0, closed by covers c c.
In use this device is connected to a stove pipe by means of its sections E and 1 When used as a drum the damperIis closed, and the heat and smoke, entering through sectionE,
divides and passes through slots h h, the edges of the arms h h and of the diaphragm h making a tight fit with the sides of the drum. They then pass over arms h it down inside and up through section F. During this circuit the heat is transferred to the metal, and from it to the room outside.
By opening the damper it can be used as a portion of an ordinary stove-pipe, or for the purpose of giving a strong draft to start afire.
The openings in the top can be used to clean the drum or to keep articles warm.
I am aware that a drum having a horizontal partition near its upper end, with a central valved pipe and vertical end walls extending to near the bottom of the same, controlled by a hinged flap at one end and a slide at the other to open and close the draft, is not new, but may be seen in Patent 159,888; also, that a drum having a horizontal dividing-partition perforated at its edges and provided with a central. damper, used in connection with a tubular valve having upper and lower openings, is shown in Patent 204,570. I do not therefore claim either of said constructions, but desire to limit myself to the construction herein shown and described.
What I claim is In a stove-drum, the combination, with the drum A, having the pipe-section E, communicatin g with the bottom'D, and the pipe-sec tion F, extending down through the top 0 to near the diaphragm 7L3, of the frame H, having the slotted arms h h fitted tightly within the drum and extending from the bottom to near the top thereof, and the diaphragm 7L3, having damper I i, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILFORD W. YOKOM.
Witnesses:
