Description

v (NoModeL) P. S. HOLLORAN. Faucet and Bushing.
No. 242,322. Patented May 31, E881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PATRICK S. HOLLORAN, OF IVASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO THOMAS TRACY, OF SAME PLACE.
FAUCET AND BUSHING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 242,322, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed January 18, 1881.
'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK S. HOLLORAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Washington, in the county of Washington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in B ushin gs and Fancets, of which the following is a specification. The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and simple means for tapping beer and the like, in which there will be little or no liability of waste in the tapping, and no spring used in the faucet or bushing, as are at present used and found very objectionable.
The nature of my invention relates to improvements in faucets and bushings for barrels and thelike; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
: In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, Figure l is a representation of a perspective of the faucet with the plunger-arm removed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bush. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of theperforatedplunger-head. Figeisaperspective view of the solid plunger-head; and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the faucet and bush attached to a section of a portion of a barrel, with the plunger in a position to drive 0 the plug, also the position shown in dotted lines when the plug is driven.
Referring to the drawings, the letterA represents the barrel, B the bush, and O the faucet. The faucet is constructed with the aperture 5 a, stuffing box a, with the internal screwthreaded portion, 1), a nozzle, 0, plunger-bean ings (l, with an internally screw-threaded nut, cl, and upon its opposite end a screw-threaded portion, a, with a flange, e.
TheletterD represents a plunger-rod having upon its outer end a square part, f, to which is attached a removable handle, f, when it is to be operated. Upon this plunger-rod, near its middle or lower end, is an enlarged portion, 5 g, which is externally screw-threaded to work in the threads of the nut on the plunger-bearings. The inner or lower end of the plungerrod is also screw-threaded to receive the laterally and end perforated plunger head E,
(No model.)
which forces the plug in by the rod, and also serves asastrainer for the beer or other liquid; but when desired the solid plunger-head may be used, which is shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
It represents the bush -plug, which is also shown in dotted lines in the actof being driven from the bush. h is a screw-threaded cap, which is screwed in the head of the faucet, as shown, having an aperture for the passage of the plunger-rod.
The stuffing-box should be securely packed, which, with the cap screwed up, will prevent the escape of any of the contents of the barrel. The plun ger-rod, which is bracedin the faucethead, and the screw-threaded nut in the bearings, is also provided with a lug or stop, which prevents the threaded portion of the said rod from being entirely removed from the nut.
The bush B has a flange, it, through which are screw-holes to firmly secure the same to a barrel, a shoulder or faucet-seat, 7c, and roughened surface or diamond shaped ragging, m, by which the plug is firmly held in place until forced in by the plunger. The bush is also screw-threaded at m and n.
The operation of my invention is obvious. The bush B is intended to be permanently secured in the head of a barrel or other article to which my device is to be applied, the flange of which will bear against the article. The faucet, with a leather or other suitable washer,
o, placed upon it, as shown, is screwed into 7 the bush until its end comes in contact with the flange of the bushing, or the two flanges tightly press against the said washer, thus making a tight connection between the bush or barrel and the faucet. The barrel is then ready to be tapped, and by grasping the hen dle f and screwing up the plunger-rod the tapping is effected and the liquid ready to be drawn through the faucet and the spigot H on the nozzle.
Although myinvention is not revolutionary in its character or scope, I believe it is of sufficient novelty to deserve protection.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. As an improvement in bushings for barperforated head E, adapted to displace the rels, the bush B, having the internal ragging, plug in the bushing and partially fill the openm, as shown, to hold the plug therein, substauing' in the same, substantially as specified. tially as specified. PAT tIGK S. HOLLORAN.
2. As an improvement in faucets, the faucet Witnesses:
