PUMP ATTACHMENT FOR PORTABLE CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 740,221, dated September 29, 1903.

of which the following is a full, clear, and ex-' act description.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel means for detachably connecting a liquid-lifting pump with an ordinary commercial packing-can containing coal-oil, and thus enable the convenient transfer of the liquid contents of the can into a lamp or other receptacle as occasion may require.
Ooal-oilof best qualityforilluminatingpurposes is sold for use in cans holding from one to five gallons and from time to time is usually poured direct from the can into lampsfor consumption. The Weight of the can and its contents renders the pouring of oil out of it into a lamp a very inconvenient and laborions operation, frequently resulting in waste of the oil by its improper escape outside of the lamp and over it, creating a disagreeable odor and fouling the lamp and its support. The improvement facilitates the transfer of oil, prevents loss, and lightens the labor of filling lamps from the original packing-can;
and consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described, and defined in the'appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which si milar characters of referee ce indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side view of the improvement applied upon a can, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached perspective view of theing an exterior thread a, whereon .a similarlythreaded sealing-cap (not shown) is screwed for-closure of the can to protect its contents.
The pump that is preferably employed for removal of the oil A from the can-body 5 comprisesacylindrical barrel 7, that is notched at the lower end, as at b, to freely admit oil from the can into the lower portion of the pump-barrel, and near the upper end the pump-barrel is furnished with a dischargingspout 8, having a dependingtip end S, which may be closed by the cup-like cap 9, ordinarily held connected with the spout by a chain 9 or other flexible connection.
In the barrel 7 a plunger 10 is held to reciprocate by the rod 10, that extends from the upper end of the plunger to and through the sealed upper end of the barrel and at the upper end terminates in a handle 10. The plungerlO is of usual construction and contains a ball-valve 10,that normally seats upon the opening 0 in the lower end of the plunger, and obviously the valve will play in the chamber of the plunger as usual when the handle 10 is reciprooated, and oil will be raised and discharged from the spout 8 when the pump is placed in the can and operated.
The diameter of the pump-barrel 7 is so proportioned to that of the inner diameter of the nozzle 6 that it will loosely fit therein and is of such length that when introduced and seated at the lower end upon the bottom of thecan-body 5 the'upper portion of the pump barrel will project above the can sufficiently to permit free access to the spout 8 and also permit the free engagement of the improved nut-clamp, to be presently described, with the barrel 7 and the thread a on the nozzle 6.
As shown in Fig. 2, the improved pump connection consists of a sheet-metal sleeve 11, having an interior diameter that will permit it to slide freely on the pump-barrel 7, and at one side of said sleeve and at the upper end of the same an opening is formed having two parallel spaced flanges 11 as its side walls.
The flanges 11 are oppositely perforated for the reception of a clamping-bolt 12, having a preferably winged head 12 on one end and a nut 13 engaging the opposite end, said head and nut being adapted to draw the flanges toward each other when adjusted for such a purpose. 'The lower end of the sheetmetal sleeve 11 is formed with an integral thread 11", which is of such pitch and diam- 'eter as will permit it to screw readily upon the exterior of the threaded sheet-metal nozzle 6.
It will be seen that the pump-barrel 7 may be readily introduced into the can 51f the nozzle 6 is open and be rendered a fixture for service by fully screwing the thread ll upon the nozzle 6, this connection being then reinforced by clamping the upper portion of the sleeve 11 upon the pump-barrel 5 by drawing upon the flanges 11 with the bolt 12 and nut 13.
It will be seen that the constriction of the upper portion of the sleeve-nut 11 11 will prevent any wabbling of the pump in the can and also prevent leakage of oil out of the nozzle 6.
It is to be understood that the pump is to be placed in a full can when it is broached and remain therein until the contents of the can have been fully removed. Then the pump 'may be quickly detached by loosening the bolt 12 and nut 13, which will permit a free rotation of the sleeve-nut 11 to remove it from the nozzle 6, whereupon the pump may be withdrawn from the can and placed in a full one by a repetition of the described operation.
It is evident that by provision of the improvement the oil-pu mp may be held in position for service in a commercial oil-packing can and afford means for quickly, conveniently, and reliably filling anydesired num-' ber of lamps without waste of oil or fouling the lamps.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to' secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a can having an exteriorly-threaded top nozzle, and a pump comprising a barrel, a spout thereon, a plunger, a valve on the lower end of the plunger, and a rod extended up through the barrel and having a handle on said extended end, of a sleeve having an integral thread on the lower end adapted to screw upon the threaded nozzle, two spaced flanges extended laterally at sides of an opening in the sleeve, and means to draw said flanges toward each other for locking the sleeve and thread from turning.
2. In a device of the character described, the sleeve-nut and clamp for connecting the screw-nozzle of the can with the pump-barrel, comprising a cylindrical sleeve, two flanges spaced by a lateral opening at the side and upper end of the sleeve, a bolt and nut adapted to clamp the flanges and sleeve upon the pump-barrel, and an integral nut on the lower end of the sleeve.
