Description
l June 17, 1947. R. A. BRENNER FABRIC ANCHORAGE FOR CLOSURES AND THE LIKE 1 Filed July 19, 1945 Patented June 17, 1947 FABRIC ANCHORAGE FOR, CLOSURES v AND THE LIKE Ray A. Brenner, New Castle, Ind., assigner toNew Castle ProductaNew Castle, Ind., a copartnership - Application July 19, 1945, Serial No. 605,991
, l Claims. 1
This invention relates to an anchorage for a e: and portion 25 with hook 2li extends beyond the fabric to a plate and more particularly for anchoring a cover to a foldable closure framework of a character such as shown in the prior Patents No. 2,220,939 of Nov. 12, 1940, and No. 2,373,145 of Apr. l0, 1945 and application Serial No. 612,816 of Aug. 27, 1945.
The chief object of this invention is to provide a concealed anchorage for connecting a fabric to a comparatively flat surface support.
While herein the member providing the flat surface is shown terminated near the connection, such member may be extended and in lieu of the termination an aperture may be provided of sufficient size for the purpose required as hereinafter pointed out.
The chief feature of this invention resides in the peculiar connection between the cover or fabric and such member and by a unique anchor or clip.
Other objects and features of the invention will be set forth more fully hereinafter.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims:
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of the fabric to be supported and the member supporting same, the anchor being shown in side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the aforesaid.
Fig. 3 is a front View of the anchor or clip.
Fig. 4 is a rear view thereof.
In Fig. l, I il indicates a supporting member in the form of a wing, hinge plate or strap, etc. having an upper edge II and an adjacent aperture I2. I3 indicates a fabric or cover for such member Iwhich has secured to its member confronting face as at i4 by sewing and the like a canvas or similar anchor strip I5 and a second strip I6, the latter having aperture Il therein and an upper edge I 8. Strip I5 may be of stiifening character and project above strip top edge I8.
The clip includes a coplanar scroll portion 20, The inner end includes radial portion 2| having transverse extension 22 from which transversely projects prong portion 23. The latter is initially directed toward the plane of the scroll as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The other end of the scroll has a coplanar radial outward extension 24 and extending therefrom and substantially parallel to portion Z2 is portion 25 which terminates in a hook end 26.
Operation or use is as follows: The wire, resilient clip is nested between strips I5 and I5 edge I8 of strip I6. Lateral portion 22 projects through aperture Il. With the clip thus secured to fabric or cover I3, etc. the prong 23 is passed through aperture I2 in member Il until it has entirely passed therethrough, but projects at an angle to the plane thereof. Then pressure is applied at the portion 2A, etc. and the hook 26 snaps over the end II of member Il; Simultaneously therewith prong 23 bears against the face thereof as shown by full lines in Fig. 1. Were it not for this member upon which the prong bears, the prong would assume the dotted line position. However, it is correspondingly resisted which tensions the clip and retains hook 2E in locking or retaining position from which it can only be released by the intentional application of considerable force.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the arrangement is such that whenever and wherevei` required the clip may be applied in inverted or transverse relation and function properly. Also in all instances the wear or friction is taken by strips I5 and I6 and none by fabric I3. Also the clip has, by reason of the coplanar conformation, a large area of strip I6 pressure secured to the member Il, hence, tearing out by reason of localized large unit stresses is prevented.
Also it will be noted it is not essential that the clip be appliedat an edge of a supporting member for if such member be apertured as at I2 and spaced therefrom a larger aperture `be provided and same have an edge comparable to edge I8, that is spaced from aperture I2 in accordance with clip requirements, the invention can be utilized remote from an edge of a support member.
While the invention has been illustrated and described in great detail in the drawings and foregoing description, the same is to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive in character.
The several modifications described herein, as well as others which will readily suggest themselves to persons skilled in this art, all are considered to be within the broad scope of the invention, reference being had to the appended claims.
The invention claimed is:
l. In combination with a cover sheet having an anchor sheet portion secured thereto and a support member having an aperture therethrough and suitably spaced from an edge thereof, an anchor clip interposed'between the Sheet and sheet portion and having a portion extending through the latter and said aperture and terminating in an oset portion, said latter portion bearing against said member, and having an opposite portion projecting laterally beyond the sheet portion and ,bearing on said edge and terminating in a hook portion bearing on said member on the same face thereof as the oiset portion.
2. Structure as defined by claim 1 .wherein the hook and last mentioned portion are similarly directed.
3. Structure as dened by claim 1 wherein the clip body portion included between the cover and sheet portion is of scroll character.
4. Structure as dened by claim 1 wherein the clip body portion included between the cover and sheet portion is of scroll character, and all portions oi which are coplanar.
5. Structure as defined by claim 1 wherein the 'hook and last mentioned portion are similarly directed, and the clip body portion included beadditional sheet portion is provided between the' cover and sheet portion and the clip body portion is interposed between the sheet portions.
