SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,131, dated May. 31, 1881. Application led February 23, lPBl. (No model.)

To all whom it may concerne.

Beit known that I, JAMES O. HU'rcHiNsoN, a citizen of the United States, resident at Evansville, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and usefnl Improvements in Buckles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference. being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view ofa buckle embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a plan view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the buckle with the strap C removed, showing thc curve of the parts.

Thisinvention has relation to two-part buckles; and it consists of a concavocouvex frame having a rear cross-bar, a front cross-bar provided with a rigidvdepending tongue and side loops for attaching straps, and a second interlocking frame having front, rear, and intermediate cross-bars, and notches or recesses in the side bars near the rear cross-bar to receive the side bars of the other frame, and permit the projecting ends of the cross-bar ot' the interlocking frame to ride upon the curved side bars of thc main or stationary frame, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in theclaim.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the main orixed frame of the two-part buckle (secured to the stationary strap, as shown in Fig. 1) having the rear cross-bar, a, the front cross-bar, a3, the downwardly-curved side bars, a a', the side loops, z z, and the depending rigid tongue a4. The side bars of the main frame are sharply curved, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the bearing-surfaces of the recesses b5 of the interlocking frame B will have a double-cam action upon the main frame in manipulating the buckle to shorten or lengthen the straps.

B designates the interlocking or removable frame of the two-part buckle, having the rear cross-bar, b, provided with ends l)7 117 projecting beyond the notches or recesses b5 b5 made in the outer edges ofthe side bars, b4 b, ot' this latter frame. The side bars, b* b, of the frame B are curved, as shown in Fig. l, and are connected near the middle by a cross-bar, b3, and at the front by a flat cross-bar, b.

The stationary strap is connected to the roar cross-bar, a., of the frame A, and is provided with the usual box-loop, D.

The strap C is perforated at intervals to receive the tongue a, and is introduced beneath the cross-har b of the frame B, over the crossbar b, under the cross-bar ai of the frame A,

over cross-har b ot' frame B, and then to the loop D.

Strain upon the straps will cause the tongue aj* to en ter the perforations in the strap O when exerted inthe proper direction, and a reverse strain or pull will release the tongue when it becomes necessary to shorten or lengthen them.

The strain upon 'the straps causes the buckle to clam p the strap C tightly atfour points-viz., against the bar' b, the bar b3, the tongue a, and between the bars a3 and bG-so that if any one of these portions were to be accidentally broken the strap C would still bheld by the buckle.

What I claim is- In a two-part buckle, the frame A, having the downwardly and sharply curved side bars, a a', and the cross-bars a, and a3, the latterhaving the rigid depending tongue a4,in combination with the interlocking frame B, having recessed side bars, b4 b4 b5 b5, curved, as shown, and provided with the cross-bars b, b3, and DG, thelatter having the projecting ends 1F o7, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
