SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,994, dated May 24:, 1881.

To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES KELso, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of a spring bed-bottom and in the devices whereby the same is attached to the frame of a bedstead, the objects of my'invention being to permit the compact packing of the bed-bottoms for transportation or storage, to provide for the ready application of the bed-bottom to and its removal from the bed-frame, and to permit the stretching of said bed-bottom when the springs become slack.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bedstead with my improved bed-bottom and connections, part of the bedstead-frame being cut away to show said connections; Fig. 2, a perspective view of one end of the foot rail of the bed-bottom, and of the devices whereby the same is secured to the bedstead-frame, said devices being shown detached from each other; Fig. 3, a similar view of one end of the head-rail of the bedbottom and its attaching devices; Figs. 4, 5, and 6, detached sectional views, showing the foot and head rail securing devices in position; and Fig. 7 a diagram illustrating one of the features of my invention.

A is the bed-bottom, which consists of interlocked springs, woven wire, or equivalent elastic structure, connected at its opposite ends to the head and foot rails ab,but having its edges unconfined, fora reason explained hereinafter.

B represents the frame of the bedstead, to each of the opposite side rails of which, near the head of the same, is secured a plate, (I, having an internal flange, d, adapted to fit between the under side of the end of the headrail or of the bed-bottom and the bent outer end of a plate, 0, secured thereto, the said headrail being thus confined vertically at each end to the flanged plate d of the bedstead-frame. The flange d of each plate (I has formed in it an opening, f, and recess g, adapted, respectively, for the reception of a pin, f, and stud g on a block, D,which serves as an abutment for 0 one end of the head-rail a, the blocks D being securely retained when in place, but being readily detachable when it is desired to remove the bed-bottom from the bedstead-frame.

The foot-rail b has on the under side, at each end, a bent plate, h, the end of the rail, with its plate, embracing the flange i of a plate, 2', secured to one of the side rails of the bed-frame, near the foot of the same. The plate It has a lug, m, and the plate 2' a lug, n, the threaded stem of a bolt, 8, passing through openings in both of said lugs, and being adapted to a nut, t, bearing against the inner face of the lug m, and prevented from turning by contact with a shoulder on the plate h. The bolt 8 has an enlarged head bearing against the lug n of the plate 6, so that by turning the opposite bolts by means of a suitable instrument the foot-rail of the bed-bottom may be drawn toward the foot-rail of the bed-frame, and the proper tension of the spring-bottom A preserved at all times without the necessity of removing said bed-bottom from the frame. The instrument for operating the bolts 8 is introduced beneath the foot-rail of the bed-frame, the bolts being 011 a lower level than the lower edge of said rail. The said bed-bottom can be readily removed, however, forcleansin g or repairs on first detaching the screw-bolts s and abutmentblocks D, the end rails of the bed-bottom with their plates 6 and h being then moved longitudinally until they are clear of the flanged plates cl and 6.

By the use of securing devices adapted to act on the end frames only of the bed-bottom, I am enabled to dispense with the usual side rails of the latter, a point of considerable importance, as it permits the rolling up of the bed-bottoms or the nesting of anumber of the same together, as shown in Fig. 7, so that much less space will be occupied during transportion or storage than if each bed-bottom has a complete frame.

Owing to the fact that the bed-bottom is without side rails, and the securing devices are small and compact, my invention is especially applicable to ships berths, cribs, and, in fact, to any situation where the space is limited.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a bed-bottom having end rails only, with adjusting and securing devices adapted for attachment to the side rails of the bedstead-frame, and for action upon said end rails of the bed-bottom, all substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of a bed-bottom having end rails only, with blocks D, carried by the side rails of the bed-frame and serving as abutments for one of the rails of the bed-bottom, and adjusting-screws s, also carried by the bedstead-frame, and adapted to act upon the oppo site end rail of said bed-bottom, as set forth.

3. The combination of the end rail, a, of the bed-bottom, the plates (1, secured to the side rails of the bed-frame and having flanges d, and the blocks D detachably secured to said flanges, as specified.

4. The combination of the plates (1, having flanges d, with openingsfand recesses g, and the blocks D, having pins f and lugs g, adapted to said openings and recesses, as set forth.

5. The combination of the flanged plates (1, secured to the side rails of the bed-frame, the blocks D, carried thereby, and the end rail, a, of the bed-bottom having bent plates 0 secured to its under side ateach end, and adapted to said flanged plates, as specified.

G. The combination of the plates 27, secured to the side rails of the bed-frame, and having flanges i and lugs n, the rail b of the bed-bottom having plates h,with lugs m, the screws 8, adapted to openings in said lugs and having heads bearing on the lugs a, and the nuts t, adapted to said screws and hearing on the lugs 11:, as set forth.
