SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,727, dated May 17, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY SALISBURY, of Newburg, in the countyof Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Gate, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved gate which can be conveniently opened from a vehicle, and the outer end of which can be raised to clear obstructions in the road or a rise in the ground.
The invention consists in a gate formed of a series of horizontal rails or slats pivoted to end uprights, the inner one of which is hinged to a post, and has abeam pivoted to its upper end, the outer end of which beam is connected with the outer end of the gate by a pivoted rod, and the inner end of this beam is provided with a weighted roller and suitable stops, so that when a rope or equivalent is pulled that is connected with the latches on the outer end of the gate, then passes to the end of the pivoted beam, and passes to posts at opposite sides of the gate, the latches will be raised, the inner end of the beam will be raised, and the weighted pulley will roll to the end of the beam, thereby raising the outer end of the gate, which can be swung open by pulling on the rope.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved gate. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.

The gate is formed of a series of horizontal slats, A A, pivoted to the end uprights, B and G, of which the latter is hinged to a post, D, whereas the former is provided with one or more latches, E, pivoted to its outer edge, the front hooked ends of these latches E fitting into projecting sockets F of a post, Gr, adjoining the upright B. The upright O isot' greater height than the upright B, and has a lever, H, pivoted thereto at or near the upper end, which lever can be pivoted higher or lower on the upright (l by passing the bolt or pin J through one of a series of apertures, K K, in the upper end of this upright.
The outer lower corner of the gate is connected with the outer end of the lever H by means of a rod, K,"pivoted to the gate and to the end of this lever,
A pulley, L, from which a weight, M, is suspended, rests on the inner end of the lever B, and can roll between two checks or projections, N N, of this lever. i
A rope, wire, or equivalent, V, is attached to the latches E, passes over a pulley, O, on the outer upper corner of the gate, and is attached to the end of a lever, P, pivoted to the under side of the lever H at its inner end. The two ropes or wires Q Q are attached to the other end of this lever P, and pass to the posts R It at opposite sides of the gate.
The wires pass through slots orover pulleys on these posts, and are preferably provided with weights to keep them taut.
A casing, S, containing a spiral spring,T,
is fastened to the top of the gate, and the cord or wire V passes through this spring, which presses against a transverse rod or button, U, of the cord, thus keeping the cord or wire V drawn taut between the end of the gate and the lever P.
A diagonal rod, W, or a series of diagonal braces are pivoted to the upper inner and lower outer corners of the gate. This rod WV or the braces must be composed of two sectionsunited by a joint, X, so as to fold when the outer end of the gate is raised.
The operation is as follows: The gate can I be opened in the ordinary manner by raising the latches E and swinging the gate inward 0r outward. If there is an obstruction in the road;or if the ground rises, the front end of the gate can be raised to clear the same. A person in a vehicle can open the gate by pull ing the rope or wire Q, whereby the lever P is turned and the latches E E are raised, as the cord or wire V is connected with the latches and with the lever P. At the same time the inner end of the lever H is drawn downward and the weighted pulley L rolls to the end of the lever H, striking against the outer projection,N. By the action of the weight Mthe outer end of the lever H, and consequently, also, the outer end of the gate, will be raised more or less, according to the adjustment of the lever II. By pulling on the rope or wire Q the gate can be swung open and can be closed after having passed through by pulling on the other,
cord or wire Q.
