Application March 10, 1945, Serial No. 582,059:
A 2Claims.
' This-invention relates to an apron and it has to do particularly with an apron or protective covering designed to be worn by a person receiving a treatment of the hair or head, such as may be performed by establishments generally known as beauty parlors. Such-treatments may include the obtaining of a wave in'the hair, such as the so-called permanent wave or finger wave, or other treatments such'as awash or shampoo, or the hair may be trimmed or otherwise treated or the wave may be set.
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved protective covering which not only protects the person but which facilitates the work of the operator. In performing certain work,
numerous hair pins may be employed and ordinarily the operator has the hairpins disposed on a suitable table and one or more steps and turns are required when placing the hair pins in the hair or when removing them. The hair pins are most usually of steel construction and, therefore are magnetic and one of the objects of the invention is to provide for holding a number ofhair pins in a convenient location on the person receiving the treatment. To this end, the protective covering is arranged for the reception of a-magnetic holding instrument. Moreover, an.
article such as a comb or brush or the like is frequently employed and means are provided for holding such items of equipment in a convenient place for theoperator. Accordingly, many steps and turns or the like of the operator are eliminatedresulting in a saving of time and more efficient work. Still further, it is an object ofthe invention to provide an apron which will furnish a protective cushion or pad for the person,
which will cushion the apron on the neck of the customer and provide a cushion or padforfthe neck when the person reclines'in a chair designed forsuch purposes. 1 i
' A protective covering constructed in accordance with the'invention is disclosed in'the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of the covering applied'to a person.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevational view of the coverin applied to a person. I
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional'view taken substantially on line 33 of Fig. 2 showing the protective cushion or pad.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the apron. 1
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a magnetic pin holder.
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view taken substantially on line 66 of Fig. 3 showing the pad construction.
Fig. 7 is a detailed view partly in section showing the magnetic holder with several pin thereon.
Fig. 8 is a View of the removable pocket.
As shown in Fig. 4 the protective covering comprises a maior'body portion 1. in the form of'an apron cut out near oneend as shown at 2. The cut out portion leads. to a sort of rounded opening 3 designed to be passedaroundthe neck of the wearer. Thisopening portion may be bounded by a suitable edging 4 which advantaperson as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with-the neck of the person passing through the opening 3. The ties are drawn across the back of the neck of the person and are then brought to the front of the neck or at the throat and tied in aknot as shown in Fig. 1. The edging 4 is-preferably enlarged near the mouth of the opening 3 to provide enlarged pad or cushion portions 6. These portions may be shaped somewhat of, tapering form and areidesigned to be overlapped as shown in Fig. 3. Thus, the portions provide a pad or cushion. at the back of. the neck and are designed to provide comfort to the user. When the user is recliningu'ponthe usu'al chair designed for work of this kind. When the apronis applied to the person it'preferably overlaps in the back as shown in Fig. 2, in order to: providea water proof arrangement. Accordingly, any. water which may drip from the hair orhead is prevented from access to the clothing of the-pen son. The apron may be madeof suitable material, such as an oiled silk or rubberized fabric or other waterproof material. I
Incorporated in the apron, either as a separate piece or integral therewith, i preferably'a-reenforcing structure '1 generally illustrated at l0,
.shapedto. fit'around the opening 3 and having atleast one outstanding wing ll, althoughpas shown herein, there'are two of such wings. Each wing vis provided with a pocket 12'. apron is applied to the person the wingstake a position'on the person preferably at the back and advantageously substantially over the 'shoul der blade. This positions the ockets in a 0011-5 venient location so that suitable working devices, such as a comb'cr brush or the'like may be held thereinfFor' purposes of sanitation; and in order tocomply with'sanitary requirements; a separate removable pocket, I13 provided for in'serf-f tion in the pockets l2." As shown inFigf2 there is one removable pocket 13 illustrated and it retains a comb M. It will be understood that a removable pocket may be used in the opposite pocket I2 at the same time. While the apron may be used on various customers the removable pocket and comb are to be removed and washed or otherwise cleansed or sterilized for individual customers. One side of the pocket, as at l5, extends beyond the opposite side Hi and the pocket is advantageously left partially open along one edge down to about the location l1. This facilitates w e r the 3 insertion of a workingtool as shown in Fig. 2. The portion Ill may be, and preferably is, of an I oiled silk or rubberized'fabric.
Attached to the. apron and specifically to the part I!) i atleastrone strap 20." Asgshown herein there are two 'of such fstraps, Each is attached to the body of the apron adjacent the edging of the neck 3 and adjacent the outer edge of the part I 0. These are preferably located so as to'be' positioned near the top of the shoulder when the r h I 2,416,609
. the back of the person and below the shoulder,
apron is applied as shown in Fig. 2. These straps" are for the purpose of receiving pin holders. As.
shown in Fig. 5 the holder comprises a bar of magnetized metal 2| comprised of suitable mag-- neti'c'material, preferably equipped with a suitable -spring clip 22. This holdermay be applied to the strap as shownin Fig.- 7 with the clip engaging the strap as illustrated. A-quantity of hair pins, as illustrated at 25, may be deposited in any suitable fashion orat-random on the magnetic holder 2| and they are maintained magnetically inposition. The holders are readily removable from the apron when such is necessary for cleaning, washing or otherwise treating the apron. j
' In use, the apron is applied to the'person as abovedescribed and one or more magnetic hold-'- ers may be attached to the straps. One or'more other devices, such as a comb, may beused with its removable pocket 13.. Thus, an operator may perform the necessary operations and work upon the customer without-stepping, turning of reaching for articles of equipment. The comb is in a handy location and, indeed, right under the place where the work is. being performed on the head or hair of the subject. When it is necessary to apply the pins to the hair they are merely picked off the magnetic holder, which is immediately available, right under the location where the work is being performed. When the pins are being removed they may again be placed upon the holder; As stated above, if. the subject is to takea reclining position'in a chair which may embody the usual head rest the pads Bserve as a neckrest-and, therefore, make for comfort to the customer. Moreover, the padded. edging 4 together with the cushion 6 make the apron particularly comfortable from the standpoint of supporting the weight thereof while the customer is in an upright position. It is, of course, to be understood that the straps Zlland pockets, l2v may .beapplied directly, to the bodyportion' I of; the apron or,on a separate re-enforcing structure I'll as illustrated.
Iclaim: IPA protective covering adapted to be worn by a person receiving a treatment of the head or hair or the like comprising, abody sheet, said body sheet being out out along one edge to provide a neck opening for fitting around the neck I of the person, said body sheet adapted to be disposed'over the shoulders and part of the body ofthe person, a reinforcingmember mounted on the body sheet and partially surrounding the neck said pockets adapted to receive working tools or the like, a strap on the reinforcing member extending from a point adjacent the neck opening to a point'adjacent the edge of the reinforcing member, said strap. being secured at its ends and being so positioned that the same lies substantially over the shoulder when the covering is applied to the person, a holding device for hair pins in the form of a bar of magnetized'metaland a spring clip on the bar arranged to engage said strap. 7
,2. A protective covering adapted to be worn by'a person receiving a treatment of the head or hair or the like comprising, a body sheet, said when the covering is placed upon a person, the
wingsand the pockets thereon are positioned at the back of the person and belowthe shoulder, said pockets adapted to receive working tools or the like, a strap on the reinforcing member extending from a point adjacent the neck opening to a point adjacent the edge of the reinforcing member, said strap being secured at its ends and being so positioned that the same lies substantially over the shoulder when the covering is applied to the person, said strap adapted to detach ably receive and hold .a clip of a holder for hair pins.
