H. H. LANGSDORF WIND GUARD FOR TYPEWRITERS File d June 16, 1945 Fan. 1
Patented Feb. 11, 1947 lJNl'lED STATE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to typewriters and the which is inserted in the typewriter and about the platen thereof for the typing operation thereon, so as to prevent rufiling and blowing about of the loosely disposed flap portions of the paper beyond the point where the same is wrapped about the platen of the typewriter and being typed thereon.
An object of the invention is to produce a device of the character above described which is of simple, practical and eflicient construction and arrangement and which is readily attached to and detached from a typewriter frame in effective working relation to the platen of the typewriter and which is also provided with means for adjustment of the device in its working relation to the typewriter.
Other objects and advantages to be attained will hereinafter more fully appear in the following description.
An illustrative but non-limiting adaptation of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device;
Figure 2 is a side or end view of the same; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the entire device.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 5 designates, generally, the device as a whole. In the structure shown, the device com-- prises a main body section in the form of a rectangular plate 6 of relatively thin yet rigid and self-supporting character, of sheet metal, wood plastic, or pressed fibrous material, or any other suitable material. This body plate 6 is of length and height dimensions to amply cover the rear portion of a typewriter or the like. The same is provided with means for its disengageable and adjustable attachment to the lower rear portion of a typewriter frame, as will be presently described in detail, and it is provided with an overhanging angular flange portion 1 at its upper edge.
Hingedly attached adjacent to the free inner edge portion of the flange l is a swingably adjustable leaf 8 which is of a length substantially the same as that of the flange I and of a sub stantial width so as to overhang the platen of a typewriter to a considerable extent but without interfering with the visibility of the matter being typed or interfering with the adjustment and operation of the platen. The hinged attachment 2 of the leaf 8 to the flange of the body member 5 may be accomplished in any desirable or approved manner. A simple yet efficient means for this purpose is illustrated in the drawing, wherein angular bracket members 9 are riveted or otherwise secured to the member 8, as at Ill, and arms H are riveted near one end portion to the upstanding leg of the bracket 9, as at 12. The onposite end portions of the arms H'are provided with apertures therethrough, which apertures register with a corresponding aperture in an upstanding leg I3 of angle brackets 14 which are respectively riveted to the flange 1 adjacent the outer end portions thereof, as at I5. Hinged connection between the arms H and the upstanding legs !3 of the bracket member M, as shown, is accomplished by means of a headed bolt [6 which is inserted through the registered apertures in the adjoining parts H and I3, said bolt being provided at its outer end with a suitable nut 11, such as a wing nut or any other suitable type of nut. By loosening the nut H on the bolt it, the leaf 8 may be swung to upper and lower adjusted positions, at will, and after the adjustment is effected the nuts are again tightened to hold the leaf in position.
The means for attaching the body plate member 6 to the frame of a typewriter or the like is shown ascomprising a pair of arms l8, said arms being respectively'rigidly attached to the opposite lower corner portions of the plate member 6. The attachment of the arms [8 tothe plate member 6 is efiected by means of angle bracket l9 which are riveted or otherwise secured to the adjacent outer face portion of the member 6, as at 29, the other leg portion of each of the brackets l9 being projected forwardly from the plate member 6, as at 2|, to which portion 2| the adjacent end portions of the arms 13 are riveted or otherwise secured, as at 22.
The free end portions 23 of the arms 18 are provided with screw threaded apertures through which screw elements 2d are fitted, said screw elements having flattened or other suitable heads 25 at their inner ends and their outer ends are provided with wing-type heads 26, as shown, or other suitable form of heads for the manipulation of the screw element. So, too, to avoid dainaging the finish of the typewriter frame, the inner heads 25 of the screw elements 24 may be obviously padded in any suitable manner and by any suitable material.
It is here noted that the arms [8, as shown, while fastened at their outer ends to the lower corner portions of the main body plate 5, have their inner end portions turned upwardly at a substantial angle, This to place the screw-carrying ends at an elevation sufficient to have the screw elements 24 positioned so as to be engaged with the adjacent side portions of the typewriter frame, whereby, in whatever place the screw elements engage the frame, the lower edge portion of the main body plate will be in ample draft preventing position relative to the rear part of the typewriter when the guard device is applied.
To prevent any appreciable updraft from below the main guard plate or body element 6, a horizontal plate 21, of substantial area, is provided, this plate, as shown, having an upturned inner marginal flange 28 which is secured flatwise tothe inner face of the member 6, by riveting 29, as
indicated, or in any other suitable or approved manner. This bottom plate 21, of course, may vary in size, according to the construction and arrangement of the adjacent rear portion of the typewriter or machine to which the device is applied. So, too, in this connection, while the same is not illustrated, it is herein noted that, obviously, auxiliary end plates may be provided at the opposite vertical edges of the main body plate 5 if there be any clear space for such provision, but, in any event, ample clearance opening must be provided adjacent the upper portion of the guard or shield device at the opposite ends thereof so as not to interfere with the longitudinal reciprocation of the platen of a typewriter, Obviously, this last named provision is contemplated within the purview of the invention but, as the same is optional and variable in difierent applications of the invention, it is deemed unnecessary to illustrate the same in detail in the accompanying drawing.
From the foregoing it is evident that a device of the character described is producible and applicable to a typewriter or the like, as a, wind shield or guard for prevention of the milling and blowing about of the loosened flap portions of the paper on the platen, and such device is provided for' ample adjustment of the same both vertically and horizontally on the typewriter frame.
is not limited to the specific construction and arrangement shown.
claim is:
1. A wind guard for typewriters and the like comprising a main body plate having at its upper edge an integral flange portion extending at right angles to the plate and forwardly thereof. said flange portion carrying at each end an angle bracket having a leg rising upwardly of the flange portion, a leaf having adjacent each of its lateral edges a rearwardly extending arm adjustably bolted to one of the angle bracket legs, a bottom plate extending forwardly from the lower edge of the main body plate, and attaching means each attached near a bottom corner of the main body plate and extending forwardly thereof.
2. A wind guard for typewriters and the like comprising a main body plate having at its upper edge a flange portion extending at right angles to the plate and forwardly thereof, said flange portion. carrying at each end an angle bracket having a leg rising upwardly of the flange portion, a leaf having adjacent each of its lateral edges a rearwardly extending arm adjustably attachable to one of the angle bracket legs, a bottom plate extending forwardly from the lower edge of the main body plate, and attaching means each attached near a bottom corner of the main body plate and extending forwardly there- HAROLD I-I.
