APPLICATION FILED DEC. 15. 1917.
Patented Feb. 11, 1919.
HARRY L. TANNER, or BROOKLYN, new YORK, assrenon TO THE- TANNER ENGINEER- nre coMrAnY, me, or BROOKLYN, new YORK, A coarona'rron or NEW YORK.
TYPE-WRITER ATTACHBE'ENT.
' siding at 1144 East 19th street, Brooklyn,
' invention and shown in the operative posiin the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and use-.
ful Improvements in Type-Writer Attachments, of which the following is a specification; J
This invention relates to means for attaching a typewriter or other oflice' machine, such as an adding machine, to a desk or table drawer. The Object of the 1nvention is to provide means for supporting portlon reaching out beyond the edge of said machines in an operable position when in use and for guiding the same into a re: posing position within the drawer when not in use.- My invention has'especial adapta' tion to small size typewriters ofthe collapsible or folding type. I
Referring to the drawings wherein I have shown what I now consider to be the preferred form of my invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a typewriter attached to a drawer according to my tion. I
Fig. 2 is a view of the typewriter folded or turned down into the drawer, so that the drawer may be closed.
Figs. 3 and a are details showing different 7 m eans for securing the machine to a bar which is in turn secured to the drawer.
'Fig. 5 is a View of a modified form of bar. In the drawings 1 represents a desk or table, one of the drawers 2 of which is shown open. A bar 3 preferably of metal is shown rotatably mounted in the drawer 2 near the top and front thereof. The bar is preferably inclined at an angle to the front of the-drawer so that when the typewriter is folded outwardly in the operative position the keyboard will be turned somewhat to the front so as to be in a readily accessible.
position for the operator. The ends of the bar may fit rotatably into plates I which may be securely fastened to the sides 5 of I the drawer as by screws 4. The typewriter 7 having a keyboard 26 and carriage 20 may be fastened to the bar by strips 6 fixed to said bar by'beingpressed therearound, or
by any other suitable method and secured by screws or rivets 8 or the like, to the frame 9 of said typewriter. My invention is especially adapted to the Specification of Letters Patent. Patentedllfigb; 11, 191L9 Application filed December 15,1917. -Serial No. 207,230.
small models of typewriters and particularly those in which the carriage is adapted to fold. forwardly to effect a compact arrangement.
In the form shown, the carriage 20 folds forwardly about pivots 21 and 22 connecting forwardly extending bars 23 and '24. When folded forwardly carriage 20 is rotated through approximately 180 and rests face downward on front piece 25.
In Fig. 1 the typewriter is shown in the operable position, attached as described to bar 3, and resting on its frame 9 on the front piece 10 of the drawing, the major in the drawer as shown in Fig. 2,so that the drawer may be closed. As shownin Fig. 2, I may provide a foo 11 on the back piece 12 of the frame 9 of the machine to rest on the front edge 10 of the drawer if desired when the machine is in the In Fig. 5 I have shown a modified form of bar 3 adapted to be adjusted to fit various widths of drawers. While any form of extensible bar may be employed for this purpose, I have shown .a bar compris ing an outer or sleeve portion 3 and an inz ner portion 3* slidably inserted into said outer portion.
Any suitable means, such as a set screw 13 may be used to lock the portions together in the desired position. In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified type of clip for fastening the typewriter to the bar 3. This clip may comprise a portion 14 fixed on said bar and a portion 15 adapted to be fastened to portion .14 by means of v a set screw 16, while the two portions may be bent over adjacent their ends 14: and 15 so as to embrace the two edges of frame 9 of the typewriter.
The preferred form of clip is shown in Fig. 4:, and comprises a member 17 fixed on shaft 3 and adapted to be secured to projection 18 to which the rubber feet 19 of I the typewriter are attached. For this purllld pose the said feet may he removed and the for machines other than typewriters,
rigidlyfised in said end plates and G la-111i): ing members 6 may he made to rotate on saidjhar. In this case, a stop coliar 2T 5) may he rigidiy fixed to bar 3' on each side of cianiping member to prevent iaterai movement of said members.
in accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, 1 have herein described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus, which it new consider to represent the best embodiment ihereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only ilhistratire and that the invention can he carried out by other means. Also, while it is designed to use the various features and elements in the combination and relations described, some oi these may be altered and others omitted without interfering with the more generai results outlined, and the invention emtends to such use.
Haring described my inrention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: v
1. The combination with a desk baring a drawer of ordinar i size, of a typewriter having a folding carriage and a hinge for said typewriter secured across the onening oi? said drawer whereby the typewriter may he foided in the inrerted nosition within the drawer and turned each to an upright position above the drawer.
:2. sin attachment :ior a typewriter, cornprising a bar of adjustable iength. means for securing; said bar to a typewriter, and
means for mounting said bar in a drawer. 3. The combination Wllili a" desk having drawer, of a bar secnred across the opening said'drawer at an angle to the front of the drawer and typewriter attached to said ha r.
d. in combination, a desk, 2 drawer, a har rotatable fined across the inside adjacentthe top of said drawer, a
the machine, and that it may also heior instance, as adding or computing.
gewriter to said bar.
typewriter and means for tjii o. lsieans forattaching a typewriter to a drawer, comprising a bar, end pistes for a said bar adapted to be attached tosaid drawer, projections on said bar and ineans for attaching a typewriter to said projections.
'8. T he combination with a desk having a drawer of the arerage depth, an ofice machine hinged Within said drawer so as to fold there-into and means "for supporting said machine in an operative position on the end or said drawer when said machine is lifted out of said drawer.
3'. Means for attaching a typewriter to a drawer, comprising an extensible bar, end plates for rotatahly supporting said bar and adapted to be attached to said drawer and means for attaching said typewriter to said bar.
8. Means for attaching a typewriter to a drawer comprising a bar, end plates for rotataloly supporting said bar, means for securing said end piates to said drawer and projections on said bar, adapted to be attached to the feet supporting inemher of a in said drawer.
ill. The combination with a drawer and a desk, of an office machinehaving a keyhoard, piroted therein adjacent the outer edge- ,oi: the drawer whereby said machine may he folded upside down within the drawer and may he supported by the from;
of the drawer with the keyboard in the i oneratire position.
