Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,145, dated May 24, 1859.

To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, ADo-LPH RonsLER, of Warsaw, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harness-Tug Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same.

The nature of my invention consists in having two metal plates, forming the tug loosely attached with their lower end to a loop, each plate having a number of half round notches, which, when said plates are closed, form a series of holes through the middle of them. Another plate provided with one or more knobs, with enlarged heads, is fastened to the upper end of the trace which is slipped through the above mentioned loop, the tug plates when open, will admit the knobs of the traceplate, the tug plates are then closed and fastened by means of a screw rod, that fastens the hamehook to the tug plates, and keeps them close together.

To enable others, skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will proceed and describe its' construction and operation, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 4L, is a perspective view, Fig. 3, a top view, Fig. 2, a top view, when the tug plates are opened, and Fig. l, is a top view of the trace and traceplate.

A, A, are two plates which I call tug plates, and which are with one end loosely attached to the inside of loop, B, by means of rivets. Plates A, A, have a number of half round notches, c, along the inner edge, see Fig. 2, which when said plates are closed form a number of round holes, e, see Figs. 3 and 4.

D, is a plate, attached to trace, F, and is provided with one or more knobs, having enlarged heads, o, see Fig. l, and which will fit in the holes of plates A, A.

g, is the hame hook, the fork-shaped kind end of which is attached to the front end of plates, A, A, by means of a screw rod, h, which at the same time screws plates A, A, tight together.` f

I, is a leather flap attached with one end to loop, B, and with the other end to hame, 7e, for the purpose to protect the animal from rubbing against the metal.

From the above description it will be seen, that, when the knobs, 0, of the trace plate are locked in the holes, e, of the tug plates, it forms a very strong connection, as the enlarged heads extend over the holes, and cannot come loose, unless the plates are opened. If the trace should be lengthened or shortened, unscrew rod, it, then the hame hook, g, will come off, open plates, A, A, push trace F, forward or backward, to give the desired length, lock knobs, 0, of the trace plate, D, into holes, e, take rod, h, and screw the hame hook on, which keepsthe whole together.

The advantage of my improvement is the quickness with which the trace may be eX- tended or shortened; also, a harness can be made cheaper as the trace is not weakened by buckle holes and consequently can be made narrower.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:

The tug plates A, A, the trace plate,D, having one or more knobs, 0, the fork shaped hame hook, g, and screw rod, 7L, all arranged substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
