- JAMES D. FOSTER, OF MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.
OX-YOKE.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
T '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES D. FOSTER, of Montgomery, in the county of Montgomery and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in OX-Yokes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l, is a front view of my invention. Fig. 2, is an end View of ditto.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the adjustment of the yoke to the necks of the animals and also to facilitate its detachment therefrom.
The invention consists in forming each bow of the yoke of four parts, the two upper parts of each bow being permanently attached to the stock and the two lower parts attached to the upper parts by hinges or joints so that the lower parts may be opened or distended to be readily fitted and secured on the necks of the animals or removed therefrom.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A, represents the stock of the yoke, about one half of it is shown in Fig. 1, and B, represents a bow which is fitted to the part of the yoke shown in the drawings. The stock A, is of the usual form and construction and therefore does not require minute description. The bow B, is also of the usual form, but its construction is widely different from the ordinary kinds in general use. There are of course two bows to each stock, but as they are precisely similar, one only is shown. The bows are of the usual form and are attached to the stock at the same points as those of the ordinary yokes. The bows are formed each of four parts a, a, 6, Z). The two upper parts a, a, are firmly secured in the stock A, and the two lower parts Z), Z), are connected to the lower ends of the parts a, a, by hinge joints 0, having straps d, connected to them which cover the whole or 22,637, dated January 18; 1859.
nearly the whole of the outer edges of the parts below the stock. The lower end of the part Z), has a dowel pin 6, projecting from it and the lower end of the opposite part b,
. has a hole to receive the dowel pin when the parts Z), 6, are closed.
The lower ends of the straps (Z, have the fastening C, secured to them for locking the parts 6, Z), together. This fastening is formed by having a loop 6, attached by an eye f, to the strap of the part Z), of the bow, and to the lower end of the strap of the part Z), of the bow a curved rod 9, is attached by a joint. I11 order to secure the lower ends of the parts Z), Z), together the rod 9, is passed through the loop 6, and is bent or turned over toward the strap to which it is attached, the rod being kept in proper position by a loop or eye it, which is fitted on a rod 2', attached to the part Z), and passed over the end of the rod g, as plainly shown in Fig. 1. The fastening C, it will be seen locks firmly the ends of the parts 5, Z), together, and the dowel pin 6, prevents the parts 6, Z), from rocking.
By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the joints 0, which connect the parts Z), Z), with the parts a, a, are some distance above the lower ends of the parts a, a, as the upper ends of the parts Z), Z), are provided with tenons which fit in the slots in the lower ends of the parts a, a. It will be seen that by loosening the fastenings C and distending the parts Z), Z), the bows may be fitted on the necks of the animals and also detached therefrom with the greatest facility.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Constructing the bows B, of four parts a, a, b, b, the parts a, a, being permanently attached to the stock A, and the parts Z), Z), attached by hinge joints 0, 0, to the parts a, a, and provided with a fastening C, sub stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
