Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
.ALVA IVORDEN, OF YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN.
rIMPROVEMENT IN INSTRUMENTS FOR STRETCHING ELASTIC GAITERS.
Specih'cation forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,456, dated October 8, 1861..
To all whom t may concern:
.that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciication, in which- Figure I is a perspective View, Fig. 2 a sectional view, Fig. 3 a sectional View, and Fig. 4 a longitudinal View, of the machine in complete working order.
I construct the machine with. two horizontal brass or steel bars with notches or teeth on the outside and connected togetherat one end by a cross-bar, as shown in the drawings B B, and to the cross-bar is attached a circular lip or ange A, all being permanently fastened together and forming the framework of the machine, as shown by Fig. 3.
I then construct another cross-bar in circular form with shoulders at the ends with mortises E, through which Work the frame-bars l5, and to which is attached another lip or flange A, constructed in such form as to clasp the inside of the elastic gaiter-top, and to the ends of the movable cross-bar, Fig. 2, is attached a latch C, designed to work into (to lock the section, as shown in Fig. 2) the teeth or notches in the framehars B, the latch C being kept in place and made to work by means of a spring D.
Fig. l shows the machine complete and closed ready for use. Fig. 4 shows the machine in use with the gaiter expanded ready to be placed upon the foot. After the gaiter is stretched the'foot is inserted withoutany dificulty, and by clasping the latches C with the thumb and finger of the operator the elastic top of the gaiter is allowed to contract around the ankle when the machine is raised up, de-
taching the anges, and the slidebar drawn off from the ends of the frame-bar, which removes the machine readily from the ankle. What I claim as my inyeution, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The gaiter-stretcher constructed, applied, and operated as above described.
