Oct. 15, 1946. A. o. ZEDLER FULL DISPLAY FLAG HOLDER- Filed Aug. 2; 1944 GOD BLE 55 AMERICA" 0 IINV-ENT0R nronuav ARTHUR O ZEDLER Patented Oct. 15, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FULL DISPLAY FLAG HOLDER Arthur 0. Zedler, Yonkers, N. Y.
Application August 2, 1944, Serial No. 547,716
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to an improved holder for flags and banners, and one of its objects is to provide a holder by means of which a flag may be stiffened at one end so that it will drape neatly from its support.
Another object of the invention is to provide a flag holder which will fully display the entire surface area of the flag.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in certain new and useful combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification, and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Fig. 1 is a view in elevation, showing the holder in a horizontal position, supporting a flag in a draping position.
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the improved flag holder, supported upon a flag pole, and serving to stiffen the inner end of the flag.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional View, taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the accompanying drawing which illustrates the practical construction of the invention 5 designates the improved flag supporter, which is in the form of a straight bar of wood or other similar light material.
This bar is formed with a longitudinal channel 6 in one edge thereof, which thus provides a holding pocket the full length of the bar, but not as wide as the bar. In this channel or pocket the inner or upper edge of the flag 1 is forced by means of the U-shaped metal strip 8. This strip is placed astride the inner edge of the flag, and then the strip is forced into the channel or pocket. The strip may be formed with hand hold flanges 8a and 81), so thatthe strip may be easily Withdrawn, carrying with it the edge of the flag. The U-shaped clamping and inserting strip 9 may be formed of aluminum, zinc, stainless steel,
- or any material which will not corrode or rust under outside weather conditions, or when exposed to the air for a long period of time.
The bar 5 is formed with projections I0 and I I, located near the opposite corners thereof, and each one is provided with a hanging hole l2, by means of which a hanging cord may be looped on the bar, and the bar and the flag supported thereby suspended or draped on the wall or a post.
The U-shaped clip and the flag are positively clamped to the bar by means of the screws [3, which are extended through end portions of the bar and adjacent portions of the flag and U- shaped strip, and are secured in place by cap nuts l4, threaded 0n the ends of the screws.
In Fig. 4 I show the manner in which this clamping action is developed, so that the flag will not slip out of its retaining channel, and when draped will present the most attractive display.
In Fig. 3 I show the use of the improved flag holder, in stiffening the inner edge of a, flag, when the flag is unfurled from a vertical flag pole.
In this case the holding bar 5 is clamped to the flag in the same manner as shown in Fig. 1, but the ends of the rope I4 of the flag pole I5, are connected to the ends of the bar 5, so that the bar can be raised or lowered with the flag. When the flag is unfurled to the wind, the pull of the wind upon the flag will move the inner vertical edge of the bar away from the flag pole. By preventing the flag from sagging and holding it stretched on one end, the flag will have a longer life and will unfurl more readily, when it becomes wrapped around the flag pole, as the weight of the bar will have a tendency to force the flag into full displayed position.
The device may be constructed of rubber or plastic, for use on flag poles, and makes a useful holder for flags for homes, windows, schools, factories, streets, buildings and public places.
The device may be used with any type of flag or banner, and when it is no longer desired to display a flag or banner, it may be rolled upon the holder and stored away.
It is understood that the flag may be supported to flow horizontally from a flag pole, or may be hung on the flag pole to hang vertically.
Having described my invention I claim as new:
A flag holder comprising a, bar formed with a longitudinal slot, a U-shaped metal strip fitted in the slot and having outwardly directed flanges disposed against the edge of the bar, a flag having one edge thereof disposed in the U-shaped metal strip, and screws extending through the bar and through the metal strip and flag to hold the flag and metal strip in the slot, the flanges of the metal strip extending outwardly of the sides of the bar, and the bar having means on the ends thereof to hang the same horizontally or vertically.
