' CURTAIN AND DRAPERY HANGER Filed March 22, 19 46 Patented Mar. 6, 1951 UNITED STATES OFFICE CURTAIN AND DRAPERY HANGER Moses L. Paradise, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application March 22, 1946, Serial No. 656,404
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a curtain or drapery hanger, the primary object of the invention being to provide a hanger of this character which will permit the ready removal and the hanging of the curtain or drapery, without the necessity of the person removing or rehanging the drapery, having to stand on a ladder, chair or the like, in order to reach the hanger, as is necessary when removing or rehanging curtains with hangers now in common use.
An important object of the invention is to provide a supporting rod or stick on which the curtain or drapery is secured, the rod or stick being especially designed to fit into notches formed in the brackets, used in supportin the curtain or drapery, whereby the curtain or drapery will be properly held in its extended position.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is an elevational view of a curtain or drapery hanger, constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the device embodies brackets 5 which are formed with rightangled flanges 6 having openings to receive the securin screws 1, whereby the brackets may be properly secured to the window frame with which they are used.
These brackets are provided with openings to receive the pintles 8 of the roller 9, one of the pintles being of the spring type, to be placed under tension when it is unrolled, to rewind and elevate the curtain or drape supported thereby, in a manner to be hereinafter more fully described.
The reference character In indicates cords which are secured to the roller 9, and are wound thereon, so that when they are pulled, the spring roller will be placed under tension, to rewind the cords.
These cords ID are secured to the rod H on which the curtain or drape to be hung by the device, is threaded, the rod I I being formed with rearwardly extended end portions I2, so that the curtain or drapery positioned thereon will have a finished appearance.
Clips l3 are secured to the rod II, and these clips are formed with eyes It through which the cords W are extended, securing the cords to the rod ll.
Slots l4 extend inwardly from the lower edges of the brackets 5, the slots being vertically disposed and formed with curved lower edges 15. These slots are of widths to accommodate the rod II and curtain or drapery positioned thereon, when the rod is moved to the limit of its upward movement. Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, the rod will be firmly held against movement under normal conditions, within the bracket.
When it is desired to remove the drapery or curtain from the rod, it is only necessary to pull downwardly on the curtain or drapery, whereupon the cords II] will unwind, allowing the rod to be moved to a position where a person standing on the floor of the room in which the curtain or drapery is hung, may readily remove the curtain or drapery, without the necessity of resorting to the use of a stepladder, chair or the like, as is necessary in hanging or removing curtains or drapes supported by hangers now in common use.
When the curtain or drapery has been replaced, a pull on the curtain or drapery will cause the spring roller 9 to wind the cords l0 thereon, elevating. the curtain or drapery to its normal hanging position.
The action of the spring will be to draw the rod, together with the curtainor drapery, into the slots I4, where the rod will be securely held, by the action of the coiled spring of the roller.
What is claimed is:
A vertically adjustable drapery hanger, comprising brackets adapted to be secured to a window frame, said brackets having pintle openings spaced substantial distances from the outer ends of the brackets and having vertical slots extending inwardly from the lower edges thereof adjacent to the outer ends of the brackets, the open ends of the slots being wide, a spring roller having pintles mounted in the pintle openings of the brackets, a flat rod having rearwardly curved ends, adapted to receive a drapery, cords adapted to be Wound on the spring roller and connected to said roller and said fiat rod, whereby the rod may be elevated by the spring roller and cords, and said flat rod adapted to move into the vertical slots, the rod being gripped by the edges of the slots securing the rod in position within the brackets.
