CURTAIN HOLDING DEVICE Filed Dec. 10, 1930 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 %Z/z'a7rz Zza yg. Z6 IN ENTOR ATTORNEV Patented June 16, 1931 UNITED STATES WILLIAM ZURY, OF HOMESTEAD, PENNSYLVANIA CURTAIN HOLDING DEVICE Application filed December 10, 1930. Serial No. 501,390.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in curtain supports of a type designed to be raised and lowered whereby removal and replacement of ourtains, drapes, valances and the like may be facilitated without the aid of a step-ladder.
Another object of the invention contemplates the provision and arrangement of extensible supports for this purpose.
of a brake element for retaining the extensible support at any desired height.
More specifically stated the support is provided with pulls by means of which rais- 1? ing, lowering and adjustment of the curtains, drapes, valances and the like will be facilitated.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the present invention in retracted position to dispose a curtain and valance therefor in position for use. 7
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the support extended and the valance and curtain lowered for removal or replacement.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the present invention.
Figure at is an enlarged elevation of the support in extended position.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through the invention in rightangularly disposed relation to Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters ofv reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates generally a sleeve'member provided with laterally and oppositely projecting attaching ears 11 to secure the invention in position for use upon the upper portion of a window frame or wall structure A further object of the invention consists about a window opening. A tubular member 12, threadedly secured at its uppermost end within the sleeve member 10, terminates to provide, at its opposite end, in an inwardly directed flange 13 upon and against which a flange 1% reposes. Said flange is formed upon the upper end and upon the outer side of a sleeve member 15 having telescopic association within the bore of the tubular member 12. The aforementioned connection is repeated through tubular members 16 and 17 in the manner best illustrated in Figure 5 of the drawings whereby the curtains, valances or drapes may be shifted to occupy the positions suggested in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings whereby removal and replacement of the curtains, valances or drapes may be facilitated without requiring the operator to stand upon a chair or step-ladder. 1 A rod member 18 having one end projected within the lowermost'endand bore of the tubular member 17 Cit is bent upon itself and extended throughout themajor portion of its length upwardly and in parallelism with the outer side of 'disk member 19, rotatably mountedwithin a slot 20 longitudinally arranged within the rod member 18, is designed for yieldable contacting engagement peripherally thereof with the outer sides of the respective telescopically'associated sections of the support when the latter is extended and retracted. The rod member 18 will exercise sufficient l tension against the disk member 19 to prevent accidentaldisplacement of the device from adjusted position. A roller member 20, mounted at each side of the window casing between ears 21 carried by the sleeve member 10 in a manner suggested in Figures 3, 4t and 5 of the drawings forms a guide over which a cord or pull 22 is trained to raise or otherwise elevate the support to occupy the Figure 1 position. Pulls 23 are also connected with the reversely curved. portions of the rod members 18 to provide suitable and ample means for retracting the apparatus to occupy Figure 2 position. Bracket members 24, carried upon the upa standing ends of the rod members 18 and offset to one side of the tubular members 17 are provided with multiple prongs 25' and 26 to accommodate the attaching ends of curtain rods 27 and 28 respectively in the manner suggested in Figure 3. These rods 27 and 28 may accommodate curtains and drapes, curtains and valances, or other combinations of window decoration which completely obscure thesupports from view.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is here-- in reserved to make such changes as proper V ly fall within the scope of the appended claims. 7
Having described the invention, what I claimed is: '7
1. A curtain supporting apparatus comprising extensiblemeans vertically disposed upon opposite sides of a window opening,
telescopically associated sections forming.
the extensible means, reversely curved rod members carried by some of the sections, braking elements carried by the rod mem: bers for engagement with the sections to retain same in adjusted position, and pulls having operative connection with the rod members for regulating the position of the apparatus. 7 7
2. A curtain supporting apparatus comprising extensible means vertically disposed upon opposite sides of a window opening, telescopically associated sections forming the extensible means, reversely curved rod members carried upon the outermost ofthe sections, braking elements carried by the rod members for frictional engagement with the sections to retain same in. adjusted position, pulls having'operative connection with-the rod members for regulating the position of the apparatus, and rod bracketscarried by each of the rod members.
In testimony whereof I afiixmy signature. 7
ILLIAM ZURY.
