Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. ALIESKY, OF BROOKLYN,
NEW YORK.
ENAMELING JEWELRY.
May 3, 1881.
(Specimens) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. ALIESKY, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Enamelin g Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to produce on chased or engraved articles of jewelry made of silver, gold, or other metals a permanentlyadhering coating of enamel, through which the chased or engraved designs are clearly visible, so as to increase the artistic effect of the same and furnish thus more elegant and more permanent articles of ornamental jewelry.
Heretofore, in enamelin g jewelry, the enamel was laid on in thick layers, which, to prevent cracking, had to be laid on at both sides of the metal, so as to counteract to some extent the difference of contraction between the metal and the enamel. Owing to the thick layer of enamel employed, it has not been possible to bring out finely-chased or engraved designs in enamel, and consequently it could not be used for ornamenting chased or engraved articles.
I have succeeded in making enameled articles of jewelry in which the enamel is laid on in thin layers like glazing, so that even the most minutely chased or engraved portions are brought out; and the invention consists, first, in covering the surface of the chased or engraved article of jewelry with a translucent layer ofenamel, and burning in this layer, then laying upon the translucent enamel one or more layers of colored enamel and burning them in at one or more burnings, according to the colors employed. 1
In following out my enameling jewelry, first chased or improved method of the surface of the same is engraved to the proper design.
Upon the chased or engraved surface is now laid on, with a brush, a thin layer of translucent enamel, which is burned in in the muffle, in the usual manner. Upon this translucent coating or layer of enamel one or ored enamel are laid on and burned in, either by one or more burnings, according to the character and blending of the colored enamels employed. The thln layers ofenamel do not cover up the chased or engraved design, but render the same visible in all its details, the colors even serving to heighten the beauty and artistic effect of the same, so that jewelry of highly improved appearance and great permanency is obtained, as the enamel is not liable to crack, but adheres firmly to the surface.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Themethod herein described of enameling jewelry, consisting, first,in coating chased and engraved articles of jewelry with a thin layer of translucentenamel and burning in the same. next laying on one or m ore coatings of colored enamel and fixing the same by one or more burnings, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new articleof manufacture, chased or engraved jewelry covered by alayer of translucent enamel, and by one or more layers of colored enamel, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in pres ence of two witnesses, this 5th day of April,
CHARLES F. ALIESKY. Witnesses:
PAUL GoEPEL, CARL KARP.
