METHOD OF ENAMELING METAL FOR JEWELRY AND OTHER FANCY ARTICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,054, dated May 20, 1884.
Application filed December :'22, 1883. (Specimens.)
To @ZZ zzz/"1,0m, it may concern.:
Be it known that I, NICOLAs A. BUHLE, of the city, county, and-State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Enameling Metals for Jewelry and other Fancy Articles, of which the following is a specication.
rIhis invention has reference to an improved method of enameling metals to be used for dress and sleeve buttons, sign-letters, jewelry, and other fancy articles; and the invention consists in covering a suitable metallic foundation-plate with a layer of broken enamel of uniform thickness and then exposingthe socovered plate to white heat, whereby the enamel liqueiies and forms a uniform coating of enamel on the plate.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a front view, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section on line g/ y, Fig. l, of a metal plate enameled by my improved lnethod.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In carrying out my invention the surface of a foundation-plate, A, of copper or other suitable metal, is rst thoroughly cleaned with acids and then covered with a layer, B, of broken glass enamel, which layer is applied in uniform thickness over the entire surface of the foundation-plate. `The so covered plate is placed into a mufle and exposed to white heat in the same, by which the enamel liquefies, so that the individual particles or pieces of enamel run into each other and form a uniform coating of enamel over the entire surface of 35 the foundation-plate.
By mixing differently-colored enamcls a great variety of colored 'effects can be obtained.
The enamel has the appearance of gayly- 4o colored mottled ware, which can be used to advantage for various ornamental and fancy articles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 4 5 .The method herein described of enameling metal, which consists in covering a metallic foundation-plate with a layer of broken enamel of uniform thickness and then exposing
