Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. H. FRYE, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,690, dated April 26, 1881.
Application filed February 28, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. H. FRYE, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Kansas Gity,in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Fence; and I a do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a fencepanel embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a section through the panel, showing the guidestrap and paling in side elevation. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are sectional views through the paling, showing modifications of manner in which the retaining-fastening and barb is thrust through the paling to bind it on the cable.
Heretofore in this class of fences attempts have been made to use palin gs with cables supplied with some barbed wires. Manifold exceptions have been raised to these, the weight, amount, and cost of the metal used constituting some of the objections; so, also, the insecurity of the paling in its seat. These and many other adverse points have been made, and it is to overcome all such faults and troubles that the present fence was devised. I will now explain in detail its construction.
In the accompanying drawings, A are any ordinary fence-posts. B are horizontal cables,
each made of two parallel wires, 7) I). These.
cables are properly secured to the said fenceposts at each end of the panel. To brace the said wires 12 b apart and hold them in the proper position, I use the stay and guide wire 0, which has at the ends, or at the proper distance apart, eyes 0 for the passage-through each of one of thewires Z). By means of this guide 0 the said cable-wires are firmly and positivelyheld in the required position. These guides G C are placed along the cable B at proper intervals apart to allow the insertion between the two wires, M, of the paling D. WVhen more than one cable is used in a panel, care should be taken to have the guides 0 arranged in regular vertical lines. To secure each paling in its place, a wire, E, pointed at both ends, is thrust through it and extends ashort distance each side. One should come above the upper cable and one below the lower cable. By forming these wires E with pointed ends and causing them to project beyond each face of each paling or picket, it will be seen that they serve as barbs as well as wireretainers; but since these wires E are intended chiefly to fasten the paling in its seat, many different ways for doing this may be adopted. In the modifications shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 I have indicated some of many forms of these variations.
The fence as thus made is very light and cheap, but exceedingly strong. It will make a very good farm-fence, but is especially adapted for house-yard and for village and town use,
where a neat and attractive fence is desired, and one that can be made very ornamental by painting.
Having thus described my invention, what I consider new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a fence, the combination of the vertical palin gs D, horizontal wires B, and the wires E, pointed at both ends and passing through said palings, to serve the double purpose of barbs and cable-retainers, as set forth.
2. A fence consisting of post A, palings D, horizontal wires I) b, embracing said palings on front and rear, guides or braces (3, having eyes -0, and the wires E, pointed at both ends and passing through and projecting beyond each face of the palin gs, as and for the purposes described.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. W. H. H. FRYE. Witnesses:
J. J Rrcnaans, JAs. 0. OAsrELLo.
