UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. AUSTIN, OF GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, CARLETON COUNTY, ONTARIO, CANADA.
FOLDING BAKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,639, dated April 26, 1881.
Application filed February 18, 1881.
fifteen years.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM AUGUSTUS AUSTIN, of the township of Gloucester, county of Carleton, Province of Ontario, Canada, civil engineer and provincial land surveyor, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Folding Bakers, (not having been in public use with my consentor knowledge in theUnited States of America for more than two years prior to this application,) of which the following is a specification.
To enable me to obtain that desired portable character I make the oven -in the form of a book when closed, the pan-holder or body hein g the book proper, and the upper and lower reflectors being the covers.
The object of my invention is to produce an apparatus to cook by reflection from an open fire, and make it of a portable character for the use of engineers, surveyors, lumbermen, eX- plorers, first settlers, and for the army when marching across a country where fuel is scarce and time of consequence.
Figure 1 is an isometric view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an isometric view of my inven tion when folded in its book form. Fig. 3 is a p .nilar view of my device partly unfolded, and "owing the bars.
A A are thetop and bottom reflecting-surlwces hinged to the pan-holder or body C, hav:
ing bars Z, and provided with hinges F, by which they are attached to the body C. The
reflecting-wings are attached to the upper and lower reflectors A A, by hinges F, and provided with straddles H to attach them to the body C when cooking.
0 is the pan-holder or body of the baker, provided with hoop-iron or other bars Z across its bottom to support the pan or pans, and having the reflectors A A hinged to it in the form of the cover of a book, and so arranged asto be able to fold up so as to inclose the wings B and pan or pans.
D is the rain-board hinged to the upper re flector by hinges F", and kept in position, when baking, by hooksor their equivalents.
Eis a hinged support, made of wire bent into any form, so as to be capable of being hinged to the back of the lower reflector, A, and of be ing held to the back of the reflector by a button or slide when folded.
H are straddles or other contrivances to connect the reflecting-wings B to the pan-holder C when in act of cooking. The baker, when folded, is kept so by hooks.
To show the utility of my invention it is evident from inspection that a short time will be sufficientto putit into proper shape to be placed before the fire in a position to cook, and its quick.
. as on the western prairies.
What I claim as my invention is- In a reflecting-baker, the pan-holder C, having bars Z across its bottom, and provided with reflectors A, having support E, and provided with hinges F and wing reflectors B, having catches H and rain-board l), the whole made to fold up in the form of a book, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
Ottawa, Ontario, February 15, 1881.
W. A. AUSTIN.
