N.PETERS. PHOTO-UTNOGRAPNER, WASHINGTON, u (L V 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE A. SHERMAN, OF STEVENS POINT, WISCONSIN.
LAMP-CHIMNEY ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,614, dated April 26, 1881. Application filed January 22, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, CLARENCE A. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stevens Point, in the county of Portage and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Chimney Attachments and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acc'ompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device for attachmentto, or to be used in connection with, lamps and thenovelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The device is adapted for service upon an y lamp having a chimney through which the products of combustion from the flame pass upward and to the open air. When such lamps or lanterns are exposed to sharp gusts of wind, to sudden drafts, or the like, as in quick movement, in outdoor service, in halls, offices, &c., where doors or windows are opened, the gust of wind passing down the chimney, or even preventing the outflow of the products of combustion, will extinguish the light. To obviate this difficulty my portable lamp attachment is designed.
Theinvention consists, essentially, of an open cylinder formed with an open seam or lap joint made of the edges, the surface of which, for a considerable distance from the top, is provided with horizontal slits, the adjoining metal being deflected to form a shed in one direction. The upper edge of the cylinder is provided with projections, which extend through apertures in a shed-cap, and, being turned down, serve to secure the said cap in place.
The device is of thin sheet metal, and the two parts are readily formed by dies and quickly secured together. The plain or imperforate end of the cylinder is placed within the chimney, and currents of the products of combustion then pass through the cylinder and out of the apertures in the side, the surfaces of which apertures serve to deflect any draft, as shown. The entire device is formed of two pieces of metal, and is cheap, simple, and effective in service.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of my invention 5 Fig. 2, alongitudinal vertical section of the same; and Fig. 3, a cross-section taken on the line w m, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the cylinder, having open seam a and slits or apertures a, the edges of which are deflected, as shown. Of the same piece of metal-4. 6.,
' formed upon one end of the cylinder-blank-are nibs or projections b, which operate through apertures b in a cap, B, and which, being bent down upon the cap, serve to hold the same in place. The spring of the 'cylinder will hold the attachment in place by friction, and also allow the device to accommodate itself to differen t-sized chimneys.
Various modifications maybe made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of my invention.
What 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A lamp-chimney attachment composed of a spring-cylinder having an open seam and perforated, as shown, and an attached cap adapted to serve as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A cylinder having an open seam. and securing-nibs, andprovided with slits, the edges of which are deflected to protectadraft in one direction, combined with a cap, and the whole adapted to serve as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the spring-cylinder A, having slits a and nibs b, with the cap 13,
having apertures b, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE A. SHERMAN. Witnesses:
