Description

S. W. FOWLER. I Combined Shade and Chimney for Lamps.
N0.199,O-5O. Patented Jan. 8, 1878.
WITNEEEEE- INVENTDK UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL W. FOWLER, OF NEW YORK,
N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO F. H. LOVELL &
00., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED SHADE AND CHIMNEY FOR LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 99,050, dated January 8, 1878; application filed December 1, 1877.
and Chimneys for Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains {to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined shades and chimneys for lamps; and it consists in making both ends alike, so that either one will fit over the burner, and
' making one half of the chimney of clear glass, and the other with a roughened surface, so
that the light may be deflected either up or down, as may be desired. The accompanying drawing represents a vertical sectional view of my invention.
a represents the body of the combined chimney and shade or deflector, which may be made either in the form here shown or any other that may be preferred. Both ends 0 of the deflector are made alike, so that either one will fit over the burner, as occasion may require.
As it is very desirable to control the direction in which the light shall be deflected, 1 make one half or a less proportion of the shade of a clear glass, so as to allow the light to pass freely through it, and the other portion is roughened upon its outside, or otherwise made slightly opaque, so that the light will not pass so freely through it. When it is desired that the light shall be deflected downward upon the table or into the room, the clear flint portion of the shade is turned downward when it is placed upon the burner. When it is desired to deflect the light upward, and not allow it to strike downward upon the table or into the.
room, the roughened portion of the shade or deflector is placed upon the burner, and the light will then be thrown upward toward the ceiling.
A deflector thus formed will be found of great advantage in many instances, but is especially serviceable in sick-rooms where it is desired that the light shall not annoy the patient.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A combined lamp chimney and shade or deflector having both ends made to fit on the burner, and having a portion of its surface made of clear glass, to allow the light to pass freely through, and a portion of roughened or opaque glass, or other material, so as to deflect the light, whereby the light may be de flected either up or down, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 26th day of November, 1877.
SAMUEL W. FOWVLER.
