Description

(No Model.)
I. 'A. OL IPPINGER. Bed Spring Clamp.
Patented April'1'9, 1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAIAH A. OLIPPINGER, OF PLAINFIELD, ILLINOIS.
BED-SPRING CLAMP.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 240,385, dated April 19, 1881.
Application filed February 23, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAIAH A. GLIPPINGER, of Plainfield, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Spring Clamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms part of this specification, and in which the figure is a perspective view, showing the under side of a slat and spring and the manner of clamping the slats.
This invention relates to that class of bedsprings in which the springs are formed of spirally-coiled wire, and adapted to be secured to the slats of the bedstead by means of an extended end of the spring bent at right angles to the axis of the coil, in such manner that when applied to the slat the said slat will be clamped between the coil and the bent end thereof.
The invention consists in the peculiar manner of bending the said extended end of the coil, so that the extended end will embrace the two side edges of the slat, and also bear upon the under side of the same with an enlarged bearing-surface, formed by a circular bendin the extended end, whereby the spring-coil will be securely held and steadied upon the slat, while at the same time the spring can, when desired, be shifted along the slat or detached therefrom, as herein fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
A indicates the usual coil bed-spring, and.
end of the coil will be a little less than the thickness of the slat. The portion of the spring end 0 just described Ihave designated as a, the same forming a U-shaped bend. The extended spring end 0 is next bent to form the circle I), which lies in a horizontal plane, so as to rest fiat up against the under side of the slat. The said extended end 0, after being bent to form this circle, is bent round the inner arm of the U-shaped bend a, and then carried horizontally across the circle b, as at c, and finally bent up vertically at its end to form the clasp d, which will bear against one of the side edges of the slat.
When applied the lower end of the coil will rest upon the top of the slat, the circular bend b, forming an enlarged hearing, will bear against the under side of the slat, and the two side edges of the slat will be clasped by the outer vertical arm of the U-shaped bend a and the bent clasp d at the extremity of the extended end 0 of the spring-coil.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A bed-spring comprising the coil A, the bend a, the circular bend b, and the horizontal straight extension 0, having the upwardlybent end d, constructed and adapted to be applied to a slat as specified.
2. A bed-spring comprising the coil A, having a lower extension, 0, bent to form the vertical u-shaped bend a, the circle I) in a horizontal plane, and the horizontal extension 0,
carried around the inner vertical arm of the U-shaped bend a, and thence across the circle, as herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAIAH A. OLIPPINGER.
