BED. -WARDROBE Lyle Truman Jeary, Guthrie, Okla. Application February 26, 1945,, Serial mi. 519.715
3' Claims. 1
This invention relates to a combination child's bed or crib and wardrobe and has for its object the provision of a bed or crib with a side which can be lowered for affording access to the bed and with siidable drawers located beneath the mattress supporting portion of the bed.
Another object of the invention is to provide latch mechanism for securing the side of the crib in its elevated position by merely raising the side until it engages the latches.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a slidable side telescopically arranged relative to the lower portion of the side sothat when it is in its lowered position only the toprail of the slidable portion is visible.
Further objects and advantages of my invention. will be apparent from the following specification taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating an application of the invention, parts being broken away showing the rods of the elevated slidable crib section telescoping into their receiving tubes;
Fig. 2, a cross-section of one end of the crib; and
Fig. 3, a detail perspective of a corner of the crib showing one of the two latches for maintaining the respective side of the crib in raised position.
Referring to the drawing, the combined bed and wardrobe includes corner posts of which there are four in number connected by horizontal lower end members II and horizontal upper end members I2 with connecting rods or bars l3.
' The corner posts are connected at the rear by lower horizontal side member I4 and upper horizontal side member l5 with connecting rods or bars I6. The corner posts ID are connected to the horizontal members by means of fastening elements I! providing a rigid construction with the rods or bars l3 and [6 having their extremities in sockets in the upper and lower members.
At the front of the bed, spaced rails i8 and H) are employed for connecting the front corner posts. The upper surfaces of the end panels II are in the same horizontal plane and between these respective members (bed supporting) a bed bottom 23 is secured so that the bed may be properly maintained within the wall structure.
In like manner a floor 2| may be secured between the lower rail [8 and the corresponding side and rear panels, thus providing a compartment between the bed bottom 20 and the floor 2|. may be closed as desired. Likewise it may be This compartment may be left open or it sub-divided. As shown the compartment may be provided with a plurality of trays or drawers 22.
Above the rail I9 is an intermediate rail 23 secured in fi-Xed position with tubes 24 extending between it and the rail I9, the extremities of the tubes being. secured in sockets inthe rails. Fastening elements may be employed for securing together'the rail I9 and the intermediate rail 23, stove bolts being shown for purpose of. illustration.
Above the rail 23 is a movable side rail 25 which can be disposed. in elevated positionv at substantially the same height as the back. panel or rail I5 01'. it can be lowered until it engages the intermediate rail to afford easy access to the bed. The movable side rail- 25 is vertically slidable on rods 26, one at each end, having their lower extremities seated in the intermediate rail 23 and their upper extremities bent at right angles and seated in the corner posts 10.
The movable side rail is provided with depending rods 21 at the rear of the crib spaced corresponding to the rods l3 and I5, and these rods have their lower extremities located in the vertical bores of the rail 23 above and axially aligned with the tubes 24 which connect the rails l9 and 23 so that when the side rail is lowered these rods telescope into the tubes and do not interfere with access to the wardrobe compartment in which the drawers are located.
At each end of the vertically movable side rail automatic means is provided for securing the ide rail in elevated position. Thi means comprises a latch consisting of a pivot portion 28 mounted on a pivot 29 in the corner post I 0, and from this pivot portion is a depending arm 30 with a shoulder 3| which arm is adapted when the side rail is raised to be disposed in horizontal position to form a solid support for the side rail, the lower end of the latch arm being provided with a stop engaging the post I 0 so that the latch will be maintained with the horizontal ledge or shoulder in the proper position in order to prevent actual disengagement.
The side rail is provided with a weighted arm 32 so that when it is desired to lower the side rail the Weighted arms may be manually elevated to withdraw the shoulder of the latch from beneath the side rail so that it may move downwardly. The inner face of the depending latch arm 30 is inclined so that when the side rail is elevated it travels along this inner face and causes the latch to move or swing outwardly on its pivot 28.
It will be understood that the bed or crib above described serves the dual function of a wardrobe as well as a crib or bed, and its side may be easily lowered to aiford free access to the same, or may be elevated so that a child will not accidentally fall out.
When the side of the crib is lowered and the rods 21 telescoped within the tubes 24, the lower ends of the rods terminate just short of the lower ends of the tubes above the top of the slide-ways in which the drawers 22 are located. This construction permit the drawers to be freely pulled out and returned in free access had thereto without interference.
Instead of three drawers, as shown, a different 4 ber being greater than the length of the depending portions of said bars.
2. A device of the character described comprising a side frame including upper and lower side members and a bottom member, mean mounting the upper side member for raising and lowering movement, depending bars carried by the upper side member, said lower side member being provided with means of a length greater than the depending portions of the depending bar telescopically receiving and concealing the depending portions of said depending bars when the upnumber may be employed, and the structure of tion without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawing and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A bed wardrobe comprising a side frame including upper and lower side members and spaced substantially parallel bottom members, means mounting the upper side member for raising and lowering movement, depending bars carried by the upper side member, said lower side member being provided with means of a length greater than the depending portions of the depending bars to telescopically receive and conceal the depending portions of said depending bars when the upper side member is in lowered position, the lower side member being secured in fixed position in said side frame substantially midway between the upper of the bottom members and the raised position of the upper side member, the distance between the upper surface of the lower side member, and the bottom surface of the upper bottom memper-side member is in lowered position, the lower the upper side member, the distance between the upper surface of the lower side member and the bottom member being greater than the length of the depending portions of said bars.
3. A device of the character described comprising a side frame including upper and lower side members, means mounting the upper side member for raising and lowering movement, depending bars carried by the upper side member, the lower side memberbeing mounted in fixed position in said side frame and having means providing openings extending downwardly from the upper surface of said lower side member, and of a character to telescopically receive and conceal the depending portions of said depending bars when the upper side member is in lowered position, and gravity actuated latching means located in the path of movement of the upper side member for maintaining the same in raised p tion, but movable to permit said side member to be lowered.
